There's a youtube video of Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock playing ...um... when I started writing that sentence I thought it was "Footprints" but it might actually be Monk's "Round Midnight" now that I think of it ...but the reason this thread reminded me of it is, their performance is striking in that you never hear them play the melody. Nor the (strict) chord changes. Nor the form.

And yet it is undeniably that song...it's just that those guys have internalized the tune's architecture on every level to such a high degree that they're capable of completely deconstructing it without losing its sense of unity.

[edit: In comparison, that Garrison/Bendy duet in the OP sounds like a pretty straightforward, albeit abstracted, runthrough of "Footprints"]

For years, when I thought of “Watermelon Man,” I thought of the version on the Headhunters album. To my ears, it sounded nothing like the original. I think I am more tolerant of the composer taking his song to some place I don’t recognize than someone else, but I am just one man and one opinion.
