I recently received this reply from Bob Gollihur regarding an update on the Micro 300 modification:

When they diagnosed the transformer as having the problem it was
further determined that it could be improved. While the original
group of OK Micro 300 heads were already quieter than even the
iAMP800, it will be even quieter yet, and also more graceful when it
nears clipping.

I don't have an exact date, I would expect mid-July.

I hope that is indeed true. Even though my replacement Micro is quieter than the original, the hum is still present. I trust that us early adopters will be able to send our units in for repair/replacement once the new ones are available.

That's good news but, really, I just want my amplifier! Since this is to be my first, I have nothing to connect to my WZ110 and it has been lonely for several weeks already. I am kind of faking it by patching my bass through my Denon stereo receiver via my MP3 patch cord. Did I mention that I just really would like to get my Micro 300 already?

I appreciate that. On a lighter note however, I did take your advice and picked up a LittleMark which has now replaced my GK 1001RB. I'm pairing it with a Schroeder 1212R and it's just killer!

EA will take care of you on the 300. While I tend to rail on their product design and quality, no one every complains about their service and support. They always make it right eventually.

Cool on the LMII... I really like that pairing with my 1212L... punchy, and loud as heck!!!! Enjoy.

Here is an excerpt from an e-mail response from Bob Gollihur regarding the latest info on the Micro 300:


Hello Keith-

EA expects to be able to replace your amp in about two weeks if all
goes as planned. Given that the transformer causing the problems can
be unstable, it could continue to worsen-- some have, some have not.
I think they'll want you to return it in a week or so.

They will replace it with a new unit as well as send a padded EA
Messenger bag for your trouble.

We'll get you a replacement as soon as it's available. Given the
extra scrutiny the new amps will likely receive, they're giving it
extra, extra attention to make sure it's bulletproof as well as quiet.

Got a call from Mike Dimin yesterday requesting that I UPS my Micro directly to Gary Gibilisco to be fixed. He confirmed the problem was with the initial batch of (USA Made) switching power supplies. He said Gary would replace the p/s and perform a few other tweaks as well. Btw, Mike offered to schedule UPS to come and pick up the amp at my house on their dime.

I'll report on the results when I get it back.

Gave up waiting and got a Little Mark II, amazing little and powerful amp!!!

I ended up picking up an LMII as well to replace my GK 1001RB-II, but I'm still planning on keeping my Micro. As silly as this sounds, the Little Mark seems huge by comparison. At one point while preparing the package to send back to EA, I was holding the Micro in one hand and the box it came in in the other and I would have swore that they both weighed the same!

Here's the news we've all been waiting for...

Tested it with a single Wizzy 10 and it was pretty darned quiet. Not dead silent mind you, but the difference was immediately noticable. I compared it with my GK MB150E combo (which I consider pretty quiet) and the noise level was about the same.

Other things I noticed... I'm happy to say that the slight signal leak problem when the mute button is engaged that I experienced with both of the former Micros is now fixed. Btw, it might be my imagination (and a bit of wishful thinking), but this head seems louder than the other two I had.

To top it all off, Gary included an iAmp 500 bag for my troubles. It matches perfectly with my Wizzy 10 backpack!

Of course time will tell, but it certainly seems that EA has worked out the kinks in the tiny mighty Micro 300

Edit: Another interesting thing: The mute is engaged by default when you power up the amp. At first I found it a bit annoying, but I'm beginning to appreciate it.
