I have two Ibanez AFR 4 String basses, one with the Flame Maple top and one with Walnut. These are the 2019 re-issue of the rare Ibanez Affirma basses designed by Rolf Spuler. These were a nostalgia purchase, as the first bass I really bonded with was an Ibanez EDA 900 in the early 2000's, which shared a similar design. My initial plan was to buy the pair and eventually have one de-fretted, but I never got around to it. These have never been gigged, have barely been played, and are nearly in new condition. These basses play way above their price point - fast and easy, with unique tonal capabilities on tap between the Bartolini pickup in the middle position (has its own Volume and 2 Band Active EQ) and the Piezo pickups in the AeroSilk bridge (own Volume and Piezo Active Tone Control + per-string volume trim pots on the rear of the bass). They feature 24 Medium frets with Ibanez's Premium fret edge treatment, half neck-thru design, lightweight bodies, and a unique thumb rest cutout. The figuring on both is beautiful and it's impossible for me to pick a favorite.

Why am I selling these? I will probably regret it later, but I haven't bonded with these in the same way as the EDA 900 of my youth. The build on these is much better, they are beautiful instruments, but they lack some of the (overly) aggressive piezo bite of the earlier models - my ears don't hear what I'm expecting. BUT, these basses have some killer tones on tap, play like butter, and should thrive under multiple playing styles and genres. If I were gigging, I would justify keeping them for how ultra lightweight they are and the design aesthetic draws out creativity. Sadly, it's time to clear out some closet space.

Any interest in trades?
My preference is for a sale, as I'm trying to thin things down to what I play most often. There are a few things I would consider trades for:
Marleaux MBass, Consat, Tiuz (4, 5, or 6 string)
Fbass, Sandberg, Pedulla
Mesa TT-800 head
Mesa Subway 1x12 or 2x12 in custom surf green or teal cabinets
Demeter VTBP-201S preamp

Man, I can tell I'm going to obsess over this. I've always wanted one of these and always admired the design. Lord help me.

Just out of curiosity, do you know why Ibanez chose to leave an Ibanez logo off the front of the headstock for this bass?

Just a quick note to y'all know this is a great bass. I was fortunate to be the guy that bought the walnut AFR. It's honestly better than I thought it would be and it's already in the gig rotation. This seller is great - helpful, responsive, and professional. Whoever gets the maple one is in for a treat.

I had a 5 string from the original run in Saman wood . I still have the European NAMM SHOW equivalent model from the original run . Its flamed maple in see thru blue w/matched headstock . Only colored one i EVER saw . The cases on the originals were different . This is #0349 of 1000 , and these went to sponsored musicians and reps only i believe . GLWTS

I love the blue finish and it's interesting to highlight some of the differences these reissues have from the originals. I'm glad they made these reissues and made some tweaks, but in my opinion there's no way they would have hit their price point if they did a perfect reproduction. Thank you for sharing.
