Ibanez Sr506 Or Mtd Kz6

I don't have any experience with the MTD but I have an Ibby SR506 and I like it very much. It has a super comfortable neck and is not too heavy, as well as being versatile tone wise due to the 3 band eq and dual pickups. I would recommend it anyday, especially considering the price tag.

34" scale vs. 35" scale a factor? If you aren't comfortable on 35" scale, I would go with the Ibanez. I am short (5'7") and the 35" scale MTD imports I have played all felt huge to me. OTOH, if you prefer, like many do, 35" scale, the MTD is a really good choice.

I'd personally go with the mtd since I think it's a brilliant mod platform. Then scavenge the ebay for something like ken smith or peavey VFL pickups and maybe an aguilar pre. I bet it would be monstrous.

I'm not an ibanez person, but the 506 is actually really good for the money too. And if the idea is to spend the minimum amount of money to the bass and not mod it, it just might be the smarter buy too.

I owned a sr506. It had a really tight sound on it. My only complaints were the body wood was pretty soft. The wood was easily dented/marked by buttons/belt (easier in comparison to a bass with an actual paint finish). She was also a bit top heavy.. aka..there was quite a bit of neck dive. This could be resolved by using a large strap, or holding it up with your hand. I personally couldn't play with it for 4-5 hours at a time (Not physically incapable, just decided I didn't need a nose diving bass).

Other than those 2 things i Loved it!

Lets see, The Ibby cost no more then half as much as the mtd. Can you justify the price diff? If so, buy the mtd. Otherwise save yourself the $600 plus and get the Ibanez. Your question would make a whole lot more sense if you where comparing the mtd to a prestige Ibanez that was in same price range imo.

I'm glad this was brought up because Im dealing with the exact same choice now. I actually have an MTD kz5 Maple neck, Amber finish....modded with barts and 18volt pre and its a great bass. But I want a six string and was going to automatically get the KZ6 but I just so happened to come across the Ibanez sr506 in a music store and was blown away buy the sound. Especially because I am missing the vintage jazz sound in my KZ5 (Naturally) I can get it but it has to be Forced over the real tone of the bass, and the SR506 can do that very well (Naturally) and MORE and at a fraction of the cost. But the KZ just reeks of quality, great mod platform, holds its value pretty nice and the Look is just killer. at the end they both have very different TONES..and the SR506 is surprisingly high quality bass for the money except maybe the plain look/color!..uuuuggg I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!

Very different basses. The Ibanez is 34" scale and has tight spacing. THe MTD 35" scale and wide spacing.

The only thing these basses have in common is number of strings and active preamp.

Both are good basses. But so different that it is impossible to recommend one either way over the other without knowing your preference.

I prefer the Ibanez in terms of tone.
