Ibanez sw100?

ive been considering what 100w, 300-400 dollar combos to get. and i think i might get the IBanez SW100. even though its by Ibanez, primarily a guitar company ive heard some good things. ive also looked into the Yorkville 100 w combo. i really dont need more than 100w now and if I get any big gig i can always use the DI to connect to the sound system.
i play metal and ska with a 4 string ibanez iceman with active EMGs.

i was also wondering since the ibanez comes with an extension cabinet can i plug in any regular cabinets into too?

so what do you think of the Ibanez SW100, or do you think i should get the Yorkville instead?

i had thought of getting the GK Brat Pack but ive heard it wasnt very loud. And you cannot upgrade slowly with it, since the head and cabinet cant be used with any other head of cabinet.

Volume-wise, I can't really help you. I just play at a church and it is more than enough, but the same doesn't necessarily go for you. But with compatibility, you can interchange anything you want. The head only has one output, if that is what you mean, but if you upgrade to another head, you can still use the cab, and if you upgrade to another cab, you can still use the head.

oo. that changes my views on the GK brat pack, and since the gigs im going to be playing are not very big and im pretty sure they all have PA systems for the XLR out to plug in that makes the GK brat pack seem better.

but does anyone have any experiences with the IBanezSW100 or YokrvilleXM100?

I've used - and still use in a friend's rehearsal studio - an Ibanez SW100. It worked fine for me when I played small gigs, and I really liked the parallel Send/Return loop. I used a generic 15" + 10" extension cab at another club to get the full 145W for a show and it was plenty loud enough for the small club scenario. I moved up to a Mark Bass CMD 102P for a better sound and much more portability.

The SW100 is kind of inarticulate and doesn't have enough projection and clarity for me - which can happen with 15" combos in my admittedly limited experience with them. It also can become quickly overwhelmed volume-wise. The tilt back feature is great and the controls and general sound are fine, but not optimum. It's also heavier than I like - something like 78lbs. I can lug it into a gig with one hand but not as easily as my Mark bass @ 44lbs :smug:

It's worth trying as it may suit your needs just fine. The advice is the same for any piece of kit, in my opinion, as you don't know if something works for you until you try it. Elitists will scoff at you, fan boys will slam you, but if something works for you - it works.

Good luck!

Thank you a lot for this. i just need something for about 3-4 months thats better than a 15w GUITAR amp... and if it works it works. i dont think im going to get drowned out by a ska band and i can always hook up to the PA sound system.

As for the Peavey TKO i would buy something used but for now im not searching yet because im going to get my amp in mid january.

And one more thing, does anyone think the GK Brat pack is a better choice than a 100w combo?

Even though many people consider it a beginner amp, I love my Fender Rumble 100/15. I bought it at Guitar Center for $300 even. It isn't the fanciest amp, but it meets my needs and was affordable. It has a very good XLR out that works fine and isn't noisy. It has a warm sound, does not have a million knobs, and is easy to get around because it comes with wheels. Although it is kind of hokey, it has red pulsing lights that can be turned on/off. The singers in my praise group call it the "Holy Spirit" light and jokingly insist that it be turned on during services because they claim they sing better when it is on pulsing to the rhythm.
Merry Christmas,
Johnny

I can't say too much bad about my SW100. I love it, I haven't had the opportunity to play in a live venue with it, but a friend of mine whom I bought it from used it in open jam nights at a local bar and it held it's own quite well and if you've been to to open jam, you know how brutal they can get on equpiment with several different musicians playing through it in a night's time. I hardly have to adjust anything on my bass but what adjustment I do make are very friendly with the amp eq. I like a low smooth tone and I get the perfect tone out of this amp. I also plug an extension cab with a Carvin 15" into it and sounds great. But on the other hand folks on this thread make great suggestions on other amps too.

thanks for all of you input guys. but i think im not going to get a 100w combo anymore after seeing an ashdown electric blue 15 inch 180 watt combo for a $399, and it is compatible with an extension cabinet.
Not trying to poo all over the idea...but I'm betting that combo only makes the 180 watts after the extension is added. By itself, you're probably looking at around 120-140 watts. You'll hardly notice the increase in volume, if at all.

Mike

yes i know about how its only 180 watts with an extension, but still 120-140 watts is still better than 100. And then if i get a cab i could either play with a full 180 watts or sell the combo for a head and then slowly upgrade from that. i dont really need more than about 180 watts because the gigs that i plan to get are not that big and i can always use the XLR out.

Just to add to your confusion, take a look at the Traynor Dynabass 200 or Yorkville XM200 combos. Very good stuff and better in my opinion and experience than many of the others mentioned. You can upgrade it later with an extension cabinet, but on its own it can put out some decent volume. Quality is high and the warranty excellent. The Yorkville XM200C is the older version I owned. The Traynor is essentially the same but under the Traynor name (same company) and with some upgrades in sound. The Yorkville 100 is a good amp too but will not handle an extension cabinet.

I'd avoid the GK entry level stuff. The Backline 600 head is good but I don't like any of the Backline series speakers. The pro GK gear is great and one of my favourites.

yea i considered the yorkville 100, although its the same price as an ashdown that can support an extension cab. But the 200 is out of my price range. if i can get something used id consider it.

yea i read a lot of reviews about the cheaper GK gear so im steering away from that.
