Does anyone know what Bootsy used on this track? I know he used a Mutron-III, but I also know he's used EVERYTHING. Are there any filters out there that can get me that DEEP, gritty filter sound? But it sounds too synthy to me. I also had a micro q-tron, but all 3 of the ones I had crapped out on me, so I'm a bit hesitant to go EHX. I did REALLY like that filter though, but its been so long that I can't recall the specifics of the sound. I appreciate any info/suggestions that you all might have. Thanks!
The MXR bass envelope filter could probably get that sound, he has other drives/distortions going too, so that will affect the sound too.
I was wondering about that. I wasn't sure if it was distortion coming from the amp/cab or from a pedal. Do you think Id have better luck running the grit before, or after the pedal?
I haven't been too happy with the MXR Demos that I've seen so far. Haven't find one to try out either, but Ill keep my eyes open for a used one. Any other suggestions are welcome.
One some tracks that the Mutron was used, Bootsy used the drive control in the less common position. I forget if its up or down, but lets say you get the MXR filter...you would put the mutron in the opposite up/down position. I just forget which position you would have it in atm.. mutron, big muff, and something else...maybe micro synth?
The Pigtronix EP2 is outta control deep. When used with a dirt pedal, it's pretty grizzly. Just another option to look into...
"I'd Rather Be With You" is pretty early, so I don't think there's a lot of stuff going on there (studio version). That original Mu-Tron III is a pretty mean machine, and the gain is actual gain, not just sensitivity. It can be overdriven. I'm not saying the studio version of "I'd Rather Be With You" is just bass, Mu-Tron and amp, but considering Bootsy's own inimitable talent and funkiness, I wouldn't be surprised.
Anyone have any experience running any of the above with grit? Most of the demos I found (just a quick glance) only had clean sounds. I like the form factor of the proton a lot. Is the wonderlove an expanded design, or is it its own thing? Seems to have a lot more features for not too much more bread
Bootsy seems to like the Chunk Systems Octavius these days. I used to have an original Mutron III and now I've got the Octavius. Neither got/get a whole lot of use but for me the edge of coolness goes to the Octavius. And it's got dirt too.
They are different beasts. Both great filters but different sounds. Hard to describe the difference but there are demos of both that help give you a sense. For me the WL is the way to go because of the effects loops. You can put all the dirt/fuzz/gain you want in there and still get the filter to react the way you want... oh, and it can go really deep and all wet.
+1 I can't comment on what Bootsy used. But the 3leaf Proton sounds gnarly!! I was content with my MXR BEF until I heard the 3leaf.
Spencer added a decay knob to the Proton. I think I would have appreciated that on mine when I had it. I'll order another someday.
I've heard really good things about the 3leaf Proton as well. I'd suggest that as well. On a side note this thread reminded me that Easy E was awesome haha
