ID These Pickups

Just picked up a really nice used Lakland Jerry Scheff 4. For some reason, this one has different pickups in her than standard. Not sure if this was done at the factory or after the fact (got her for GC in mint shape, but with no paperwork or history). Pickups have GREAT tone and are dead-ringers for vintage jazz pups (tone-wise).

They appear to be very high quality with vintage style cloth covered wire. I'm guessing Lindy Fralin, Nordstrand, etc. Can anybody ID these?

you sure they're not the standard Kent Armstrong lipsticks minus the cases?

I can say they look a lot like the Fender CS 60's I put in my project bass a couple years ago. Same cloth covered leads too.

Is the bridge one longer or is it the same?

I thought the KA pickups were the cool part about the Scheff model...not for everyone, but definitely a different vibe than your typical Jazz pickup...

yeah, could be Fender Vintage 60's....a very common replacement Jazz pickup...

You could try asking GC about who the previous owner was.. They should have on file who he is, and he probably has a customer account at GC with a phone number.

My guess goes to Fralins. They do look a lot like the CS pickups and being on a Lakland...that's where I'm getting my guess from.

They look exactly like the ones in my JO. All the way to the color/texture of the binding that holds the poles.

I was thinking Lindy's also as the Nordstrands look different and from the pictures I've seen of the Lindy pups, these match. They sure do sound good (I mean great)!

FWIW:

identifying a J by it's appearance is a piece of the puzzle but not reliable as a rule - short of something blatantly different like a SCN.

Could be a custom shop but they typically have the sticker logo's on the cover and they have ground plates as they're true singles. There apparently is also considerably variation in CS's with some having tapered or staggered poles, and some have the old purple looking formvar winding. That gives you some idea of what you're dealing with here. The best source is the previous owner.

Yep agree, for playing all that matters is what they sound like but KNOWING what they are does matter for resale and purchase - if they suck you sure don't want another set of them and if they don't suck you may want another pair of them. Also the last set of pups I bought off ebay was a pair of anonymous pups for $35 shipped.
