The tone is very distinctive. It's all over Emmylou's Luxury Liner album from 1977 or whenever it was.

Anybody know what his tone formula was?

Thanks! That's definitely it.

I suspected it had a shorter scale...turns out to be a medium scale (30"). The tone is percussive with a distinctive "plonk" to it that I don't think I could get with my P or my J. It also sounds like he's using a pick.
