Ideas to replacing Yamaha rbx 270j

Hello fellow bassists!

I am currently using Yamaha rbx 270j bass. I like it very much, very light (7.5 lbs), well balanced, alder body, pj configuration, jazz type neck, very fast. I mostly use p-pickup with pick, and both pickups with fingers, tone is very satisfying. Wanna replace it only because I want to record, and the sound lacks in clarity a bit imo, and sound level is little bit inconsistent on some frets (like dead notes or something, my English is not very good). Also a bit of fret buzz, especially with pick.

What are good improvements with pj pickups, budget is 450-500 dollars.
Was thinking of Squier Jaguar bass, is it really of an improvement?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried recording it yet? The clarity that you don't hear when playing through an amp may be there when you record. Same with the dead notes, make sure you're not just playing the bass through one amp in one location. Sometimes a room will not let certain notes resonate as well. I would try to hear it recorded before you decide you need a new bass.

Good point, thanks!
