If they weren't liars, they were, as I said, the two most stupid US citizens in the world. Exactly how long would you think about hiking the Iranian border before you decided it was a bad idea?

I do.

Basic common sense.

People are naive, much more than many of us realize. Look at me, I had no clue about the racial issues still in the USA until some very enlightening threads popped up here over the years.

Let me explain my perspective before you guys write me off as being an idiot. I live in a city that borders a military installation. Several signs mark the border and warn you about potential trouble if you cross the border. Then you get up in the woods and those signs are harder to come by, or people have taken them down so you wouldn't know when you cross over. You hear about people wandering around on the military property and honestly didn't know it. I used to do it all the time with my buddies when we were younger. The MP's would come along and chase us off.

But you'll never wonder where I stand on an issue.

That is quite true.

But I am simply overwhelmed by two things: #1 Their extremely poor judgement / or extreme stupidity, and #2 the media painting them to be innocent young American tourists.

I also agree with your assesment. It was certainly not a good decision to hike where they did.

But I ask, how else should the media portray them? The Iranian government was making these two out to be spies, do you think thats the case? Or were they just "innocently" dumb American tourists?

Call them what they appear to be: young people who were were they should not have been and they should have known better to be there, but they don't have enough working gray matter in between their ears to understand. Or just so unrealistically idealist that they thought that they would be able to reason with the Iranians and show them the error of their ways.

good point... but.... You are a US citizen in a US state and you are talking about a US military installation. One word changes everything... Iran.

Well, #1 is probably what they are, I really hope #2 isnt the case, because then they'd probably be the two stupidest US citizens.
