IEM Question?

I've never used any and I'm not familiar with how to set them up so excuse this noob question. Is it possible for just one member of a band to use IEM's? Or do you need to have the entire band fitted out with them? I play ampless through a DI. I generally don't have a problem hearing myself through the monitors but everynow and they we play a gig where they have monitors that can't handle the bass at all, or later in the night the crowd gets louder and I find myself not being able to hear myself. I was hoping some IEM's could solve this problem. Is it possible for the sound guy to send a mix to my IEM's and also send a mix to the monitors for the rest of the band? Sorry for what might be dumb questions but and advice you can give would be really helpful.

It is possible for you to be the only one on stage with IEM's, there are two things that must happen:

1. You either bring your own wireless IEM system\beltpack\headphone amp OR the sound company has to be informed in advance to provide an IEM solution for you.

2. The Sound guy has an available AUX send on the console just for you i.e. not with the drummer, guitarist or keyboardist..

Make sure you have appropriate in ear headphones, or you might suffer from bad sound, poor isolation or both, which will make you think that IEM is a very bad solution. It is not if you use good headphones.

shtik forgot a few possibilities..

You can tap off the mains or monitors

Use a personal pass through mixer (rolls PM351) to add "more me"

You do need an assortment of cable options... to connect in.

Great offer from MNAirhead he is very up on this. I would also recommend you sit down for a few hours in the Live Forum and do an IEM search, you will find the basics have been covered in depth many times. Good luck, I have never looked back.

This is a tough one to learn real info on.... I had to scour for a year to find unbiased opinions

I couldn't find any vendors that had real world experience---- tb was filled with one dimensional answers

I was blessed to find a few stadium act sound crew folks who taught the basic steps and how they get around the common issues

There may still be one of my magazine articles flying around the net

I did this in a band I was in a few years ago.

I used a Shure P4M to send signal to my wireless transmitter. I passed my vocal mic, electric guitar mic, and acoustic guitar signal through the P4M to the FOH snake. I took a parallel send from one of the monitor mixes into the aux input of the P4M, and (this was very important) ran an ambient mic into the fourth input of the P4M. It worked really well for me once I mastered the art of getting it all balanced.

The downside was that it took me nearly as long to set it all up as it did to set up the PA and I was always the last guy out at the end of the gig.
