I get a very satisfying sound out of my NSD NXTa and I am working with my old Kay sound. I was wondering, since Ned Steinberger codesigned the Realist with David Gage, is the pickup inside of the NSD NXTa similar to the Realist ??

No - The Polar Pickup in the NS Design Basses and Omni Basses are a design that is specific to the instruments.
That said, both use piezo-electric elements to sense and electrify vibration, creating the signal to be amplified. So they work on very similar principles and have many of the same quirks, advantages, and limitations.

Thanks. I was wondering if the same chain i use with my NXTa would work the same way with a Realist on my Kay.

Yes, I think it probably should. The tone will be different, though. The Realist is an inherently dark-sounding pickup, since it's against the "table" of the upright bass. The Realist, IME, works best on a bass with a carved top (a hybrid or fully carved bass) since it gets its primary input from the top. On laminate (plywood) basses they can be a bit dark and indistinct. This may be a preferable tone for you, depending on what you're after, but on a Kay (which, on average, is already a more "thumpy" toned bass) it may be too much low end and not a lot of high end.

To better answer your original question, the impedance buffering effect of your current gear will be largely similar between a passive NS bass and a pickup on a full-bodied acoustic upright. There are more subtle differences, to be sure, but they will be in the same ballpark.
