I'm done with Fender!

that is a bummer, but I have to say, my '59 CS Relic P bass is on par, if not better than most vintage P's I pick up these days (I do prefer the SD Atiquity ll pickup in mine, though). guess I lucked out, the neck has been straight as an arrow for 4 years.

I have yet to figure out the appeal of the Fender Custom Shop on any level.

Well, the guy that set-up my Custom Shop '64 Jazz Relic Bass, Steve Soest (former bassist for Dick Dale's Deltones and designer of every Danelectro Bass, and Luthier to many Guitar Greats, asked me if I wanted to sell it and if I ever give him first crack at it because it's playability is totally indistinguishable from a real vintage 64 Jazz Bass and the best one he's ever played.

That is unacceptable.....I cannot believe that any company let alone an established one like fender would respond in that way especially with their high end product.
+1, that's very disappointing. I prefer Lakland to Fender, generally, but I still wouldn't have expected a shoddy experience like this for a CS bass.

Man that sucks. I'd just sell it as is. Full disclosure, let the new owner get a new neck if he wants. Use the money to buy a G&L JB. Better bass and you can pocket $500 because somebody will jump on a Fender Custom Shop for $1500 even needing some neck work.
Sell a Custom Shop '59 Precision to buy a G&L jazz bass?

The sad fact of the matter is that, no matter how much crucifixion Fender shall endure in this thread, it will likely have no impact on them changing their corporate behavior. They're big ol' Fender; the legacy of Leo, and perhaps feel that they are above such petty things, whereas a smaller builder might recognize the great potential for damage to the rep and jump through those aforementioned proverbial hoops more readily.

I'm through with Fender, as well (and that's a damn shame). My best Fender instruments have G&L on their headstocks, and my Squier beater is no slouch.

It'd be nice if they paid SOME attention, though. Talkbass is almost definitely the biggest bass forum on the internet so many, many, many eyes are on this topic even right now. It ought to matter.

Maybe I'm not getting the shim deal. If the truss rod needs tightened it's to take out bow. A shim won't fix that. Or am I being silly?

Oh, wait, do you mean shim as in truss rod washer? That would at least get you through.

Well thats bad news...but I just got a Geddy Lee Jazz by Fender and I a/b it with my SAdowsky and and me and everyone in the band liked the sound of the Fender better. Even in the live setting everyone talked about how good the Fender sounded but not many talked about the SAdowsky, pretty good $650 investment. Maybe you just got a lemon. THat happend to my friend that got a brand new Toyota Camry a few years ago he is always getting problems...sorry but sometimes we get screwed.

Completely unacceptable. Those CS guitars/basses are Fenders boutique stuff and I can't imagine any boutique builder allowing something like that out of the door the 1st time, let alone returning it from a warranty repair and doing nothing.

Well you know many of them are very good. I looked for a Fender Jazz that I liked for a long time - and rejected many many of them before landing on a Custom Shop "Custom Classic" that I love. So they can be better, but this truss rod story is ridiculous. Shame on Fender.

well as long as you have it and you're stuck with it, might as well shim the neck. at least it'll be playable.

I disagree. No newly purchased instrument, wether its a Squier or a custom shop should come with the Truss rod maxed out on day one. Its Crap and they need to fix it. Period! Why buy a supposedly quality instrument if your going to need to fix it. I would become such a ridiculous thorn in their side that they would be sending me a whole new bass, begging me not to call again!

I bought a GK MB 212 combo. I had an issue with it. I wrote to the President of the company, Mr Gallien. He said it was unacceptable to have this issue, send it back. I spoke to MF where I bought it. There response was "Do you want a refund or a new one?". None of these people even had to see or hear the amp to say that.

I had a new amp delivered two days later. Zero issue. No cost to me.

That's customer service.

This Fender thing is truly horrible. If ever I am in the market for an amp, I know where I will go. For a bass? Fender? If they treat their top of the line customers like this, imagine what happens to us lowly earthlings.

John

It's a shame CS is no better when the price is so high...yet that often is the way of some large companies (musical instruments or others outside the field). Suffice it to say: With all the alternatives out there like Warmoth, Sadowsky, Lakland, G & L, Lull, etc., etc., etc., AND the varied pups and parts - one certainly does have alternatives. It just comes down to how one values the logo as opposed to the instrument ;)
