Congrats! I remember when I bought my wife the ring I bought myself a bass the same day. I have since sold the bass, but have kept the wife.
If you insist. She always kind of had two stipulations about how I asked, she wanted to be surprised and she didn't want an audience. We had gone tubing Saturday afternoon with a bunch of people from church. On our way back, I told her to drop by in an hour and I would have dinner ready for her. When she got there I had our song playing, Sting's "Fields of Gold", and I had about 50 candles forming a heart in foyer. As she opened the door I was kneeling in the middle of the heart with the ring in hand. She was totally shocked.
She knew that I was going to propose in the next few weeks, so my whole plan hinged on her thinking that I wasn't getting the ring until next week. To throw her off my trail, I convinced her that on Friday I had to stay extra late at school to finish up a project (we live in separate towns), meanwhile I was driving to Toronto to pick up the ring. Then on Friday night, and again on Saturday afternoon, I "slipped up" mentioning that I had to be in Toronto on Tuesday. She knew where I was getting the ring from, so she was now convinced that I wasn't going to have the ring until Tuesday. Which is how I surprised her and she is impossible to surprise.
Oh, we ate the dinner as well. It was an amazing beef stew served on fancy china with white wine and lots of candles
