Ima Robot

micah, 3 of 5 members of the band took a hike before it was released. and alex the singer said in interviews that he felt like he let the lure of money get the best of him at the time. so it sounds like displeased is quite an understatement.

but if it makes anyone involved feel any better about it, i thought there were some good songs on it. it just sounded to me like they went too far in the other direction with taking out all the edginess that made the first album so great.

but these two new songs are really good and the edge sounds like it's back. love the marimba in sail with me. based on the strength of these two tunes, i'll buy the album when it comes out. great stuff.

I felt pretty much the same way - it doesn't have the strength of the first album, but there are still a bunch of songs I like and over all I'd still put it at better then lots of the other crap thats being put out, so I was curious as to how the guys actually felt.

I only gave the new songs one listen through, and it was fairly passive listening as I was doing other stuff but immediately I like them.

So over all, was the band displeased with Monument?

Also, Justin, what all did you play on? Just the first album and the EPs before, or more?

I can't speak for the rest of the band's take on Monument, but, especially after knowing what some of our demos felt/sounded like, I find most of it unlistenable. Not trying to be inflammatory, that's just the way it is. The record feels antiseptic, lifeless, and false. It's not 100% Ima Robot by a long shot. That's just me. Now, such harsh words must also be taken into context: I was so bitter and disenfranchised because of the producer choice (and his production methods) and label stance that it very definitely colors my perspective of the record. I should probably give it another listen sometime....there must be some redeeming aspects to it.

I did everything else prior to that, including stuff on the Search and Destroy EP, the Alive EP, the Dynamite EP, etc.

Yes, Virgin almost killed this band, but we are gonna try make it work again. Everything that JMJ said about the process of making the second album is true and we all hated it. Virgin was about to go out of business and simply couldn't think straight :-(

P.S. check this beautiful video featuring two new Ima Robot songs:

P.P.S. JMJ we miss you

Cheers,

Filip

The new album should generate a lot of interest with Ima Robot "again". The tracks I've listened to sound solid and well engineered. The only problem with the original push was the label - Virgin and timing. Personally, I believe with this release the timing is right with all the new eclectic bands out there. Timing is everything. Good luck.
