I'm looking for an effect that can emulate what muse's bass player did on Uprising. The Akai SB-1 he uses I cannot find. Anyone know of a good effect pedal or board that will emulate that well?

In search of alternative to Akai SB-1

How much are you prepared to spend? Regardless of the direction you go, I can tell you that it won't be cheap, lol.
Well, an OC-2 or Octave Multiplexor, a Pruned and Custard and supposedly, a woolly mammoth (Though I have not confirmed this) in that order.
I'm not trying to be a troll here, but I'm curious...
Whats the big deal about emulating a bass players effect, particularly Chris W's? There are many Youtube vids out there of guys using various pedals to get this guy's tone and for what? I would understand if one was in cover band and wanted to do the song justice but I think time would be far better spent trying to create your own personalized effect, no? Sorry, I will shut up now

I can't answer for others, but I occasionally play with others, as well as recording.
I keep my ears open for sounds which are interesting. I might not be slavishly playing another's parts, but I might like a particular tone or sound for my own purposes.
So, one could say, why worry about how another player gets a particular punchy or tasty tone? Why play that particular bass or amp? Go for something completely different!
The thing is, if someone has already figure out a solution which might work for you, then why not take advantage of that solution? Why reinvent the wheel?
I understand that you might draw the line in a different place regarding wht you consider to be an acceptable adoption of someone else's solution, but given your presence on this online forum, I suspect you don't make your own clothing to have your own personal look. Instead, you buy a solution someone else has already put together. The Amish don't view that as an option, and that's okay. However, every answer you come up with explaining why you use elements of prefab clothing could be applied to the question of effects, or even your choice of amp or instrument.

You guys are awesome. I'm just a humble Bass player that's been playing bass for a long time and now I just Play for the sheer love of playing. Yes I am in a cover band and we like to do each song we do justice. I have the luxury of a good income that allows me to buy toys for my rig and help make my tone as best it can be for everything I do. I've recently discovered this app and am amazed at the amount of help and advice is given here. I will try the OC-2, pruned and custard , which I don't have. Thanks!!!
Thanks for all the info....I thought the Akai Sb-1 was what was used. I just ordered the Crowther Audio pedal. I checked it out on You Tube and definitely gotta have that. I appreciate the input. New to this forum and love it. I assume that it's the same effect on Hysteria as well? I primarily do not use effects but we are starting to cover some Music that really requires some effects. I currently have a Digital Chorus and a Bass Pod I use sparingly. Not a big effects guy but looks like I am gonna delve into some here. Thanks again!!

I could spend lots!!! I was unaware of how many effect pedals and boutique stuff is out there for bass. I don't play for a living anymore and have been in cover bands for a long time but it looks like im gonna be spending some serious coin. I'm diggin some of the pedals I've discovered so far. I just need to educate myself on stuff like Signal chaining and what works well with what. The options are rediculus!!!

Here is a tease of a song my band is working on. The tone in the middle is not a direct emulation of anything Chris has ever done, but it is a possibility with his rig. The point was, I learned how to build sick chains with his rig, and now create what you hear here....

Why do people sit down and study Scott LaFaro and Ron Carter's bass lines (and many others)? It's the same thing. Nowadays, sound design is one of the most important aspects of bass in popular music. It is just as important as learning rhythm changes was in the Bebop era and equivalent to studying J. Jamerson's groove to cop a motown feel.
I'm not a huge fan of Muse, but I respect where everyone is coming from. He has the stones to use effects tastefully in a rock band and much can be learned from his approach to sound design. Sorry to derail.
