So, I have noticed a distinct lack of discussion about indie music here. I find it crazy that there is so much new music that is changing things and going in new directions, but nobody is really taking notice. I am currently infatuated with Tapes 'n Tapes. They're from Minneapolis, and they're quickly becoming huge in the indie scene. I saw their show at First Avenue last Saturday and it was easily the greatest show I've ever seen. They're my new favorite band. I'm also digging Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, they're really different, but in an insanely good way. It's the new direction of music! Other great indie-style bands that nobody mentions on TB: Cloud Cult, the Go! Team, Rilo Kiley, Of Montreal, the Unicorns, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Thunderbirds are Now!, I could go on and on, but is there anyone else that's completely crazy about this scene right now? Do you like these or other similar bands? What do you think this movement will mean in the long run? Do you think that the music industry will embrace these changes, or will they rather continue making money on the "sure-thing-cookie-cutter-who-cares-about-culture-and-development" idea?

yeah the Arcade Fire are pretty good, i heard David Bowie actually came on stage to play a few songs with them at a show :eek:

i'm kind of an outsidered lookng in ont he indie scene. honestly i don't know many of the bands, though i have heard most of the bands you mentioned

i'm big into Aloha and Sufjan Stevens right now (if they still are considered indie)

I think it was David Byrne, though Bowie is also supposed to be a big fan also. There's a video floating around the internet somewhere of Byrne & AF performing Naive Melody. It's pretty cool.


I really dig old Twee: Heavenly, The Orchids, Tiger Trap, Beat Happening, The Sugargliders, etc. Also the Pipettes & the Lucksmiths for more contemporary indie.

i think a reason for the lack of indie music here is that this is a bass forum. the bass in indie music is root and fifth notes. its not interesting enough. the most active it would get is maybe a walk up or a 3 note lick. this is also the reason why there is little to no mention of country on this forum.

Indie is short for independent. In the 80's it was called 'college rock' and refered to bands like Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi or the Replacements, who used to be hardcore punk but started producing poppier and/or more complex (musically and lyrically) albums. They were independent because those bands were signed to independent labels like Touch & Go and Dischord, and the term connoted an adherence to DIY. Nowadays, most indie rock bands are on major labels, and the genre of indie rock refers more to the band's sound than what label they belong to.

Blonde Redhead - Gorgeous three piece post-youth textures, two brothers on drums and bass/2nd guitar/vocals, the wonderful Kazu on vocal duties/guitar.
Chin Up Chin Up - Indie rock with no distortion, fun.
Cursive - Almost could be emo except it's not ****. Features some great cello playing on all but the early and latest records (cellist just parted ways).
Death From Above 1979 - Bass/drums duo, make dancy rock music.
Dismemberment Plan - Three piece Boston scene post-punk, disbanded a couple years ago. Known for their quality musicianship and odd time sigs, especially in bass/drums.
Do Make Say Think - Canadian post-rock, heavily jazz and dub influenced, instrumental.
Efterklang - Group of 6 from Denmark with constant guests, gorgeous vocals, strings, sin wave electronic sounds, bells and horns. Experimental but more classical appeals.
Explosions in the Sky - Austin 4 piece post-rock. 2 guitars, bass, drums. Gorgeous instrumentals.
The Futureheads - Brit indie pop.
Hood - Brit experimental indie pop with influences from dub, indie hip hop, electronica.
Lali Puna - Female vocals, Munich circuit laptop rock. Could be considered a dirtier Notwist, singers from both groups are actually husband/wife.
Les Savy Fav - Most notable post-punk art rock band around, NYC.
Minus the Bear - Ex-Botch (revered hardcore), indie pop with some chops.
The Notwist - Laptop pop from Munich, warm vocals, really well produced.
Of Montreal - Retro sounding pop.
Olivia Tremor Control - Same as above, but with a lot of noise.
Pinback - Pretty indie pop.
Pretty Girls Make Graves - Fun rhythm sections, female vocals, got some edge (not familiar with the latest release which sees the addition of a keyboard player replacing their excellent dueling guitar setup).
Q and Not U - Three piece indie pop with post-punk leanings, disbanded. Nothing complex on bass as the guitarist filled in duties last couple records, but still fun songs with a lot of energy.
Slowdive - Shoegazers.
Sonic Youth - Longtime no-wave superstars starting in the early 80s. If you haven't heard them, at least check out Daydream Nation. Basically invented the indie scene in a lot of respects, but interestingly enough have been on a huge label for over two decades at this point.
Xiu Xiu - Noise with pop sensibilities, start off with albums Fabulous Muscles or A Promise.

Short list, sorry but I'm at work. I hope someone finds something they like from here!

Yeah, I love all these! The Notwist is some of the most beautiful music I've heard. As for bass being simple in the style, it could really go either way. The bassist for Of Montreal is exceptional, really Paul McCartney-ish. He's become a major influence on my playing in the last several months. the Dismemberment plan has some interesting lines, too.

How about Drive Like Jehu? I like them a lot.

Are there any good websites with clips from a bunch of these bands? I'd like to get into more Indie bands. I like the edgier stuff, alot of the indie stuff i've heard doesn't hold my attention. Probably haven't heard the right stuff though.

While I have no idea if Byrne has played with them or not, I do know that Bowie has indeed shared the stage with them at least once.

Lots of great bands mentioned in this thread. I'd like the add the name Psapp to the list though. Its kind of like The Postal Service, but Psapp is much more organic and a lot better in my opinion.
