That's fantastic, Bruce... must be great, I know how long you've been searching.

Can you post some pics?

I finally got my bass near a digital camera....;)

Hi Bruce!

You're creating a riot here man... :-)

So, I've read through this thread a bit too fast, how much did you spend? And what do the guys in the store say about shipping?...

I'm in the UK too, studying music in Liverpool and I'm also very interested in a nice DB for a reasonable £.

By the way, Steve Berry who was mentioned in this thread, is my bass-teacher. :-)

I though I mentioned that the list was £1495 - I could have got a slightly cheaper deal but went for interest-free credit instead!! :)

Err..not sure what you mean - I picked up the bass from my local store in Brighton - I'm sure there must be shops in Liverpool which would get one in?

Ooer - maybe I won't tell you that story then!! ;)

Well, I could try to ask then downtown if they can get one for me then. Just have to get my finances right first.

Story?... take it easy, I'm pretty hard to offend in any way.

For a reasonable selection of basses in the UK you could try Peter Tyler in Maidenhead, he did my setup and did a pretty good job for a good price.

Last time I was over there he seemed to have a range of about 15 basses from 600 pounds upwards, some of which were 'nice non-shiny 2nd hand basses'.

However, I know that's a long way for you from Liverpool tho...

Well, thanks for the suggestion anyway. :-)

I think it's likely that if you go to a general music shop, or even a violin shop then you are likely to get a couple of cheap chinese basses and then something like the Stentors or Zellers. It's really difficult to get reasonable second-hand instruments unless you find a small place that just does basses...and there aren't many of them over here...

Yup - I've been living that for the last 2-3 years, but having met up with Olie at Jazz Summerschool and being able to compare with 10-15 other Jazz students as well - I think we decided that the Stentors were good enough for us!! ;)

And stangely enough...I never happen to be "just passing" through or near, Maidenhead!! :D

Hi boys!

Well, I contacted Peter Tyler and he'll mail me a list of available basses in near future (his getting one together for the homepage anyway I guess...) He was very kind in his e-mail reply...

I've written an e-mail to Gollihur and asking him about the delivery and waiting time to get a Bulgarian bass built. It'll take about 4-8 weeks, which is not that long and the price is good I think (approx. 1,300£ shipping from Bulgaria incl.).

I'll see what Tyler can come up with and then decide what to do, still I'm on a crappy student budget, so I have to beg the bank for a loan I guess... -what the hell, you only live once.

Not denigrating Peter Tyler in any way - he's a very nice guy who I've talked to on the phone a few times....

BUT ...this typifies my experience with buying a DB and how strange and different it seemed compared with buying BGs in shops that actually have large and consistent stock.

So - you look through adverts on the web or in yellow pages and you think : ah a Double Bass shop - great!

But no, it's really a private individual who buys and sells DBs from his home, does a few setups etc. etc.

So they might have a few basses in their house when you phone or might not as they sold them yesterday/last week and is it worth driving 3 or 4 hours to somebody's private residence...on the offchance they might have a bass...:hmm:

So sometimes I've phoned and dealers like this have said - well I've got nothing in stock but I can buy you a bass and set it up - well no I want to go and try basses, look at them, see how they feel etc. etc.

So I just waited until I could get to try some basses - but it took me 2-3 years ... whereas I could go into the Gallery or Bass Centre in London on any day and try dozens of high-end BGs and decide what I liked - it was such a weird difference to me...?
