Info on pre Ernie Ball stingray colors

Hi all. Can someone steer me in the direction where I can find info on paint finishes for a 1978 Musicman stingray.

I'm looking at a 1978 ray for sale in Japan. It appears to be a color very similar to the Dargie delight color although with serious mojo. I can't tell from the pics if it has ever been re finished but the owner says he bought it from the original owner.

In the pics the paint is wearing off in the usual places like where you would rest your right arm etc. There appears to be a reddish colored undercoat on top of a grey colored undercoat then the wood.

It looks like a good one but the seller is asking $2100 for it. Does that sound reasonable or is at the higher end of what this bass should be worth?

Bought my 1980 with mojo for $600, non original bridge and E-tuner though.

Looks like a severly greened-out inca silver bass. 2100 probably isn't all to bad, especially overseas where they tend to be even higher.
Inca and Walnut are two colors that command a higher price, but it also depends on condition-condition-condition.
I dream of nabbing an Inca someday, but I have passed on greened ones in lesser worn shape.

Wierd, looks more like yellowing of the clear coat than a refin, since the wear transition is quite smooth. But what a weird colour to yellow to. Never seen that.

^ agreed, but I wouldn't spend that without seeing some better detailed pics with the pickguard and control plate removed. It would answer all questions.

Good call. That would put the refin/yellowing debate to bed.

I'll contact the seller and try and get him to open it up to have a look see!!!!

It could also be a case of the lighting when it was photographed, camera used etc etc etc...

has me intrigued though will have to find out now..

On another note I found two others in japan going for way less...The first is a walnut coloured 79 for $1600...some mojo but not too bad

the 2nd is a natural finish in not too bad shape at all..."mojo" but not serious...

One thing though with that one, is it doesnt have a serial number on it...Is that unusual???

I've been checking the U.S market....there's one on ebay at the moment up to around $1200 so far,,,condition is so so, lots of dings, wear etc and a BIG ding in the headstock that goes nearly through it!!!!
