Ingrown toenails

After many years of being told by my doctor that the hospital waiting list was 4 years, I bit the bullet and went to a private Chriropodist/Podiatrist and paid about £120 per toe, to have them done!! Professionally!!

Ouch, thats alot of cash!

My mum was a chiropodist for years, and I think it was about £20-£25 an hour

However, I agree, get it done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Also, to whoever was saying they come back, the vast vast majority of people who get ingrown toenails arent cutting them properly (as someone else has already pointed out)

Scrape the top of the nail with a knife(or nail file) until it is thin enough to flex out of the wound with a little cotton ball underneath. Put cotton under it to keep it from pierceing the flesh further. Let it grow out past the wound.

Just see the foot doctor and then you're all better...after that gruesome surgery.

You can do it yourself. You need to get at the part of the nail that is digging into your flesh. Use any suitable, sterile object. But before you go in there, soak your foot in hot soapy water first to soften your piggies up.

Prying at it may "hurt a bit", but it is an excellent way to build fortitude.

He's right. My wife did this time and again, and eventually the toenails grew out normally. It took many repetitions, but she's tough and kept at it. As noted above, keep things clean.

One of my daughters had the surgery - six months later they'd grown back into problem territory. I wasn't impressed. And the painkilling injections into the toes were a lot like they drove nails through her toes - she will NEVER do that again.

Those things suck. Go to a foot doctor. They numb you up, cut it as necessary and you're good to go in under 20 minutes.

I did mine myself with a sterile piercing clamp and a screwdriver to pry it up. Hurt like hell it was super deep and far back.

To me - that was pretty cheap comparing the different experiences!

So many year before I went to Hospital and had it done for free - but it was a very painful experience, I was unable to walk for 6 weeks and then after a year they grew back!!

But as I mentioned many years later I went to a private chiropodist practice and was treated by their podiatrist.

It was £120 per toe - but that was painless, professional - one at a time, so I could walk straigh away - worked very well and there has been no sign of them growing back since I had it done 5-6 years ago now!

I think you get what you pay for !

Pay nothing and get a lot of pain and discomfort or pay a bit extra and get a decent service that works - I know what I would recommend!!

I'm sorry you had what might have been a bad experience. If the portion of the nail is not done permanently (I never do it permanently when it's infected-- too dangerous), then it will come back. I tell my patients that they should expect it to come back when I do it for a temporrary procedure (infected). If I can get the infection under control a few days before the procedure, or if it's not infected to begin with, then I will do the permanent procedure. They almost never come back when that can be done. It's the kind of procedure that people come back and tell me that they wished they had done months ago. Besides. If you had some of the ingrown toenails I've seen, you'd welcome the injections to kill the pain!

As a matter of fact, I did one to my wife 2 days before our wedding... and she still married me. She danced every dance she wanted that day.

It's the kind of procedure that people come back and tell me that they wished they had done months ago.

I wished I had done it years before - it was stopping me doing a lot of things and giving me a bad back, by always favouring one side!

In fact it was stopping me driving as I coudn't bear to push down the pedals - I decided that I really need to be able to drive to gigs and so I had to bit the bullet - but after I had it done at the chiropodist/podiatrist I was just kicking myself (sic) for not going before!!

Oh maaaan... these toenail surgery videos are almost as addictive as the ol' superzit megathread we started a while ago! I know I started watching to get some actual information and learn what I need to get done and how it should be done correctly. Which I did find a few really knowledgable videos. But then I started finding the more gruesome bloodbaths! Am I a disturbed individual for being hypnotized by this stuff?

You do get what you pay for, we werent exactly running a surgery, it was only in a room in our house, plus out in a small town i dont think people would be willing to pay that much

But yeah, its a great relief, almost instant release

Ive had 4 rounds of the procedure done on one toe, 3 to clean the infections, 1 permanent fix (6 months ago, and no more problems with that side) and will have one more in a month or two for the last permanent fix.

I let the initial infection go for about 5 months before going to the podiatrist. Had the first cleaning procedure, went back 3 weeks later and had the permanent fix. while the permanent fix was healing, the other side of the same big toe got infected, so I got that cleaned, however the doc never scheduled the permanent fix. so 5 or 6 months later that side became infected again and I got it cleaned again. I'll have the permanent fix done in a month or so and hopefully that will be the end of it.

The day or two of recovery time (depending on the severity of the infection and the skill of the podiatrist) is so much better than months of pain with every step. Go to the Podiatrist
