The Triumvirate is a unique take on an distortion box. First, the guitar signal is separated into three parts -- lows, mids, and highs -- using a simple second-order crossover network. Next, each part goes through its own distortion engine. Finally, each band is mixed together at the end...and you have full control over the volume & distortion of each band. In short, the Triumvirate is a compact multi-band distortion, and so it works great for a wide array of instruments -- especially bass guitar.

I know an electric cellist with a full pedal board. His goto distortion for the cello is the Homebrew Electronics Hematoma. He also uses a Fulltone Distortion Pro once in a while. That last pedal is discontinued but comes up regularly and at decent prices. He plays a 5 string cello so the range is very wide.

So your looking for alot of gain with decent EQ

or you looking for really messy...velcro sustain kinda chewy fuzz.

I never understood "chewy" until I heard it.

Mosrite Fuzzrite sounds like crap or the Shin Ei companion fuzz
but they go from high gain to fart spatter to gated fuzz in a matter of unknown random poopy goodness.
most people hate em....

otherwise a fuzz sounding stomp box with a simple EQ to boost things back. Was this horrible Ibanez metal distortion called the Invalid Link Removed. sounded like poo for guitar. Got really great sustain for bass. and the EQ made it work.

I forget which one it was..but there is a opamp big muff.
and then there is a opamp muff with a bypass switch for the tone control. it was silver that is all i remember.
anyways that thing with the tone stack bypassed going into
a multi band boss eq to clean it up.

or that weird maestro fuzz that only uses a single AA battery.
darn i cant remember the name it sounds like crap, but man when you hear it your like...#### that is FUZZ.

the Fulltone Ultimate Octave is also on the list and i found a cello demo of it online.. :D .. there was also a rat demo, but the cellist was using a fender guitar amp so it was missing a lot of low end, ... kind of like surf cello on acid..

i just ordered the triiumvirate, i had an exchange and it was in stock, i'll let you know how it works.. i am also going to use it with an '84 hamer 12 string bass which sends most pedals into a confused harmonic chaos,

i listened to a demo of the fulltone dist pro, it seems like more of a lead guitar pedal.. but that was probably the demos.. too bad there was not a bass demo-ing it....

I have tried the Fulltone Dist Pro on bass and it's nothing to write home about.
It chops a lot of bass IMHO. It does sound good however if you can live with a lead or solo bass tone. For Fulltone and bass the goto pedal is the Bass Drive. probably works well on cello, particularly the earlier versions (non MOSFET) which are a tad warmer and a tad more bassy.

I'll add a +1 for the Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian. It does dark and heavy quite well, to say the least. The tone knob is very useful, as you can muffle the crap out of it, or turn it up for gritty, buzzy fuzz. I have mine set just east of noon 99% of the time. Very dark, very distorted. Its like a heavy distortion w/fuzz character. I think it actually adds low end (harmonics)...
