Installing a truss rod

Discussion in 'Luthier's Corner' started by MNbassist, Jul 10, 2008.

  1. Ok, so the last time I installed a truss rod and the neck settled I went to adjust it, the adjustment nut broke off. (I used an LMI double action btw). Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening this time, was I supposed to turn the truss rod to a certain point before installing?

You want to make your adjustments *small*... start with no tension on the rod, and make no more than 1/4 turn, and then let the neck settle for several hours. If it needs more adjustment at that point, try 1/8 turns or so, letting it settle again between each adjustment

You can also help the truss rod by putting pressure on the neck in the direction you are trying to move it while making the adjustment.
