interesting

Interesting..... Most unfortunately, for the musician, the law of supply and demand applies here. There is an overabundance of people and bands that want to play and too few venues willing to pay. Musicians and bands that want to play-out at all costs, mebbe even just 'cause it's fun and "cool" to be in a band, will play for little or nothing lowering the minimum cost of bands to zero or near zero. If you're a venue owner and in business to make a profit then "free" bands are very attractive. Facts are stubborn things. Justice and "fairness" are irrelevant.

If the author's band had a following, he'd have nothing to complain about.

Eh, not quite. Even if you have a following many venues will still only pay you in scraps. I'm fairly lucky that my scene will actually pay original acts decent money. Most others, AFAIK, are lucky just to get a meal and a few beers comped.
