Hi Folks,

Weird one here... I installed a new set of PJ pickups into my active bass - there was no issue with the old set I just wanted a darker tone.

The pickup was exactly what I wanted and it worked perfectly fine except there was sort of a low volume distortion when I used a certain cable - I switched the cable and no issue.

Took the bass out of its case one day and the P was not functioning as it was the day before. There was sound coming from the pickup, but my amp had to be at full volume to hear it. I reinstalled the pickup thinking it was on my end, but when it was installed the second time there was no bottom end. As a test I put the J pickup where the P was and there was no issue.

I put the old pickups back in to see if it was an issue with my installation/preamp issue and the old pickups worked perfectly and still have no issue to this day - I also borrowed a different P pickup and it also had no issue.

I missed the tone of the new pickups and reinstalled them and everything was perfect again for a day then the same issue - I went back to the old pickups again and they worked fine.

I then checked the resistance of the pickup and it was only reading 4.76ohm. Under the advice of the manufacturer I soldered it directly to a jack to test it there and I was getting the same "no volume" one side of the P not able to output a useable volume at all. I took videos and showed them to the manufacturer and they asked to have them sent back for diagnostics.

I went to check the P pickup this morning and it was still hooked up to the output jack in the same way when it was "non-functional", but today it seems to be working fine, and the resistance is reading 10ohm at the end of the pickup cable with both sides of the P outputting correct volume and tone with a "tapping" test.

This is only happening with the one pickup and nothing else. All of my pots are working correctly and are cleaned regularly, other pickups work with the same installation technique, I have installed the pickups to manufacturer spec with no modification and to the bass manufacturers spec, I have tried other pickups in the same installation with no issue (except for they were not the tone I was looking for).

Has anyone in Talkbass land encountered this before? The only time I've seen something like this was when there was a loose wire that failed under usage on the bobbin of a 1973 jazz bass I repaired, but that pickup didn't "come back to life" when left alone for a week.
