Intermittent signal in Reaper

I have kind of a strange issue -

I use a Tascam US-1800 interface with Reaper as my DAW. I've never had an issue with this setup (apart from my own lack of recording/playing skills, but I digress...) Recently, the signal coming from the interface would start cutting in and out very quickly (like once to twice a second) when I would arm the track. I haven't used one of the XLR inputs in a while, so, as far as I know, this is just when using the 1/4" "guitar" input.

Yesterday, on a hunch, I used the interface with Garage Band. It seemed to work just fine, which makes me think the problem is with Reaper and not my interface.

A friend said he thinks it's probably the buffer settings in Reaper and/or the interface, but I haven't been able to test that just yet (too many menus to go through!)

Any thoughts on what may be causing this problem? Thanks!

I had a similar experience with Logic and my Presonus 1824c interface. Fried my mind trying to diagnose the problem for a few weeks. I tried swapping interfaces and changing DAWs (tried GB, Reaper and Audacity). Same issues all the way across devices and software.

Turns out I had recently installed something called an ACE driver for the LoopBack audio routing software. Totally mangled signal routing between interface and DAW and introduced significant latency into the routing. Had to go into Loopback each time to reset my preferences. Pain in the @$$.

I ended up uninstalling Loopback and the ACE driver, reinstalling the OS, reinstalling Logic and updating the firmware on my 1824c. All seems stable now.

Appeared that the ACE driver for Loopback was taking audio signal precedence over any other setting either within the OS or the DAW.

I'd check to see if you've got something audio-oriented installed that might be causing interference between your interface and Reaper. Or go as deep as you can into your audio settings and make sure everything is routed as you'd like.

Ha…I thought this was going to be about some weird sounds in “Don’t Fear the Reaper.”

Yeah, yeah…DAWs. But the only thing “DAW” means to me is the first three letters of the word “Dawn.”

Man if I had the patience and know how for tape, the only other thing I would would be lots of money for reels of 2"...and a Studer.
