Internal shelf/slot port wall thickness?

Hi folks, hopefully quick cab construction question... How thick does the shelf of a slot port have to be?

On the cabs I have with a shelf port, the shelf itself is made of the same thickness wood as the rest of the cabinet. But for round ports, relatively thin plastic is used.

It would be sweet if I could use thinner material for this large surface, for weight reasons...

Thanks for input!

A shelf port CAN be thin, but since the cylindrical port is more or less self-bracing the thickness doesn't matter.

Can be thin only applies to the dimension, it must still be stiff enough that it doesn't flex or vibrate or become difficult to work with. For a long span, even 1/2" material needs to be braced.
