Tim,
Great posts - very comprehensive. I would like to add something - more on a practical side.

1. Many of my students really get caught up in playing in keys other than the most popular or the ones they play in most often. The beauty of the scale forms and the arpeggios that Tim so nicely gave examples for, is that you can see that EVERYTHING is easily transposed. Playing in F# or B major is not more difficult than playing in G or C.

2. Ron Carter talks about staying in 1 position as much as possible - it is more efficient and you have a very large range of notes available to you. As well, although most pros can play in any position on the neck - the "money" position is in the first 5 frets. You can easily find the scale form for any key within the first five frets. here is an example using the 4 string

key: A scale form: 6 position: 2
key: A#/Bb scale form: 6 position: 3

Using the Scale Forms and Tim's great diagrams, you now have all the keys and all the arpeggios in the "money" position.

This is really the way I like to work. Practice in one or two positions.

I want to reiterate what I said before - SING everything you play. I don't care how badly you sing or if anyone is listening. Sing it.

Mike

make sure you work on every note in a given position - not just from the root up.

When you get 1 position down, move to the next. All the sacle forms and arpeggios are the same, they now just relate to different keys.

I have a little technique for finding the scale form from any given root.

If the tonic is on the same string (6th, 7th, 1st and 2nd scale degrees):
If your pinky is on the root, your first finger starts Scale Form 6
Scale Form 1 encompasses the 7th and the 1st
Scale Form 2 begins a whole step up from the root

If the tonic is on a higher string (pitchwise) (3rd, 4th 5th scale degrees):

Scale Form 5 begins on the string right below (pitch) the root note.

Scale Form 6 starts 2 frets up from Scale Form 5

and if your pinky is on the root, Scael Form 3/4 starts with your first finger.

If you can see this intervalic relationship. you can find your bearings anywhere in the neck

Lesson 9.

Learning how to play.

Let’s start slow. I am going to lead us through building some simple bass lines to a simple chord progression that uses only major and minor chords without using 7th or b7th’s.

Let’s use the chord progression I-vi-ii-V, which in the key of C is C-Am-Dm-G.

Let’s use the “Money Position” down the neck. On a four string bass, C is third string third fret, A is fourth sting fifth fret, D is the third string fifth fret, and G is the fourth string third fret.

I put this into Band-In-A-Box. I am using the “WORSHIP.STY” style right now. You may have to tape record a guitar or piano playing these chords. You may need to tape record a friend playing the chord progression if you do not play guitar or piano. Maybe someone can post a midi file.

So, somehow make this progression with one chord to a measure, four beats to a measure, continuous for as long as you can.

The progression:

|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|

Ok, play through the chord progression.

The first time through, play the 1 of each chord:

|C______|A______|D______|G______|
|C______|A______|D______|G______|
|C______|A______|D______|G______|
|C______|A______|D______|G______|

The next time through, play the 1 of each chord on beat 1, and right before the next chord, play a leading tone going to the next chord:

|C_____B|A_____C|D_____C|G_____B|
|C_____B|A_____C|D_____C|G_____B|
|C_____B|A_____C|D_____C|G_____B|
|C_____B|A_____C|D_____C|G_____B|

C B A is descending, A C D is ascending, D C G is descending, G B C is ascending.

The next time through, play the 1 of each chord on beat 1, and right before the next chord, play the 1 again and a leading tone going to the next chord:

|C____CB|A____AC|D____DC|G____GB|
|C____CB|A____AC|D____DC|G____GB|
|C____CB|A____AC|D____DC|G____GB|
|C____CB|A____AC|D____DC|G____GB|

Again, C B A is descending, A C D is ascending, D C G is descending, G B C is ascending. Figure out some different leading notes for yourself.

The next time through, play the 1 with your index finger and the 5 with your third or fourth finger from this form:

|-----|-----|--5--|
|--1--|-----|-----|

|C___G___|A___E___|D___A___|G___D___|
|C___G___|A___E___|D___A___|G___D___|
|C___G___|A___E___|D___A___|G___D___|
|C___G___|A___E___|D___A___|G___D___|

Time to have fun. Figure out different ways to start each measure with the 1 of the chord, play the 5, and play the leading tone to the next chord. Use quarter and eighth notes.

Some examples where each dot is an eighth note and the L is the leading note:

|........|
|1...5.1L|
|1115..1L|
|1.15..L.|

The next time through, play the major triad like this:

|-----|--3--|-----|-----|--5--|
|-----|-----|--1--|-----|-----|

And the minor triad like this:

|-b3--|-----|-----|-----|--5--|
|-----|-----|--1--|-----|-----|

Like this:

|C__E__G__G__|A__C__E__E__|D__F__A__A__|G__B__D__D__|
|C__E__G__G__|A__C__E__E__|D__F__A__A__|G__B__D__D__|
|C__E__G__G__|A__C__E__E__|D__F__A__A__|G__B__D__D__|
|C__E__G__G__|A__C__E__E__|D__F__A__A__|G__B__D__D__|

Or this:

|C__E__G__E__|A__C__E__C__|D__F__A__F__|G__B__D__B__|
|C__E__G__E__|A__C__E__C__|D__F__A__F__|G__B__D__B__|
|C__E__G__E__|A__C__E__C__|D__F__A__F__|G__B__D__B__|
|C__E__G__E__|A__C__E__C__|D__F__A__F__|G__B__D__B__|

Try it with some leading notes. Have fun. Mix it up. If you need to write it down, that is ok. Figure out four different patterns, write down those patterns to the four chords, and play that four measure progression over and over.

Lesson 10.

Learning to play.

Let's say we are in the key of C, playing a 5 string bass with E as the lowest string, wanting to play down in the "money" position, and wanting to play from one of our moveable forms with all fretted notes. There are two ways to determine the form we would use. The first is to realize that F is the lowest fretted note on the lowest string of this bass that is in the key of C. F is the 4th degree in the scale of C major. This leads us to look for form 4, but we do not have a form 4...and form 3/4 can not be used because the 3 can not be fretted. So, G is the next lowest note on the bass in the key of C. G is the 5th degree of the scale of C major. "Form 5" will work from G. “From 5” is the lowest form that can be used for the key of C on this bass. The second way to determine what form to use is to look for the position of the lowest “C” in the money position on that bass, and then to realize that it is located on the second lowest string on the third fret. The form that fits this location of the key/tonic/[1] note is the form where the [1] is played on the second lowest note and the second finger. This is also Form 5. This form looks like this:

Major scale, Form 5

|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|--4--|
|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|
|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|--5--|
|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|
|-----|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|

Let’s say we are practicing for pop/rock/easy listening/worship music. This music typically has I IV and V traid chords, with maybe a ii or a vi triad thrown in. We are going to use chords that do not contain the 7th or the b7th. Let’s say we have chords I = C (1 3 5), ii = Dm (1 b3 5), IV = F (1 3 5), V = G (1 3 5), and vi = Am (1 b3 5).

The Form 5 arpeggios for these chords are:

|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|

Lesson 12.

Learning to play.

Play the same progression as before, playing sometimes from Form 5 and sometimes from form 6.

|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|

Play the following chord progressions in different keys, with different forms, sometimes moving up and down between two different forms:

I - V
C - G

I - vi - ii - V
C - Am - Dm - G

I - IV
C - F

I - vi - IV - V
C - Am - F -- G

I - vi
C - Am

I - vi - ii - vii
C - Am - Dm - Bdim

I - IV - V
C - F -- G

I - vi - IV - vii
C - Am - F -- B dim

I - ii - V
C - Dm - G

I - vi - V
C - Am - G

If you are using Band-In-A-Box, you can change keys after you have one chord progression created. Use different styles and allow the different chord progressions, the feeling of the different keys and forms, and your mood to create different patterns.

You can write down the notes to the cycle of fourths, and play in a different key each day moving through the cycle to play through every key. If you miss a day or so, wait until the next practice session to move to the next key.

Somebody please create some more lessons.

Somebody please create a lesson for playing bass lines that do not always start on the 1.

Somebody please create a lesson for playing solo lines within a form using the chord notes to play through the changes.

Somebody please create a lesson for walking through a ii-IV-V progression with 7th chords.

Somebody please create a lesson for a 12 bar blues.

We need more lessons with detailed help as shown in Lesson number 9. Somebody please create "More lesson 10", and "More lesson 11" posts with ideas to get these Forms under our fingers and into our brains in a musical context.

Remember we are Be-Gin-Ners. Please type very slowly.

Remember this is where we are coming from:

It is relatively easy to learn the bass lines that others have written/played. I have a number of students who can play all of Victor Wooten's material but have absolutely no idea how to play through a simple blues. The goal is to be able to create your own bass lines - either over a tune that you already do or some cover tunes.

While there is some great information in this thread on learning the scales and arpeggios from a fingering standpoint, and on what the scales and arpeggios look like on a bass fretboard, I want more information on practicing in a manner that gets this stuff into my head and fingers in a manner that allows me to actualy play original music.
I am using the Fixedsys font in my lessons. I highlight the text, then pull down the [Font] dropdown to Fixedsys.

I have this stuff in a Word document, with View set to "Web Layout" and the "Courier New" Font. I edit this stuff for the number of strings for my bass, select text, print "selection", and I have a sheet of paper to work from that has the exact number of lines for my bass.

I Major arpeggio, Form 5

|-----|-----|-----|--3--|-----|
|-----|-----|-----|-----|--1--|
|-----|--3--|-----|-----|--5--|
|-----|-----|--1--|-----|-----|

|-----|--1--|-----|-----|-b3--|
|-----|--5--|-----|-----|-----|
|-----|-----|-b3--|-----|-----|
|-----|-----|-----|-----|--1--|

Play the same progression as before, playing only from Form 5.

|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|
|C-2-3-4|Am-2-3-4|Dm-2-3-4|G-2-3-4|

Five String with a high "C" - I like it!!

Also I might choose to use scale form 3/4 here even though there are open strings. For a few reasons:

1. In the key of C - having that low E (the 3rd of the C chord and a great way to approach the G chord) is nice

2. Scale forms can be used with open strings, if you think of the open string as the 1st finger. If you happen to have a bass that sounds good with open strings, it will work well.

Mike

Every bass line is composed of 3 kinds of notes. In order of importance:

1. Chord Tones
2. Scale Tones
3. Chromatic Passing and Approach Tones

The Chord Tones are, as you probably have guessed, the notes of the individual chord. Chord Tones outline the individual chord/harmony.

The Scale Tones are the notes of the key and it's related scale forms that we have determined the song is in. Scale tones define the key and provide us with the ability to move from one "Landmark" note to another.

The Chromatic Passing Tones are notes that are not in the key. They link two notes that are in the key (either scale tones or chord tones). Approach Notes are notes that jump to a note that is a half-step away from a "landmark" or target. Chromatic Passing and Approach Tones provide a smooth, chromatic link between one "landmark" and the next.

Note that chord tones are a subset of the scale tones.

Laurence,
Thanks for chiming in. You present a different approach, that deals a bit more with extended fingerings. Scott Hubble has a great book on the subject. It is another way to "shake things up" a bit, get some new life into your playing. Thanks for showing us.

I have worked extensively with them and they are a great option to what I have presented here. I have, in more recent times, goteen away from extended fingerings for the scale form idea. I';ve done so for really only 1 reason. I have small hands and 35" scale basses. Being naturally lazy, I have to constantly work on the stretch to keep from hitting the wrong note.

As a way of combining what I present and way Laurence does, Gary Willis uses the Scale Form idea but adds in the ability to go 2 frets in either direction. From a pracitcal standpoint it adds one note on top and one note below the scale form. Additionally it creates a way to move ffrom one scale form to the next.

The notes of the major scale layout on the fretboard in a continuous vertical manner in two shapes:

Close Fingering:

|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|-----|-----|
|--2--|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|-----|
|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|-----|
|--3--|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|-----|
|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|-----|
|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|-----|
|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|
|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|
|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|
|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|
|-----|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|
|-----|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|--4--|
|-----|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|
|-----|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|--5--|
|-----|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|

Spread fingering:

|-----|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|--4--|
|-----|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|
|-----|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|--5--|
|-----|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|
|-----|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|
|-----|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|
|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|
|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|
|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|
|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|
|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|
|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|
|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|-----|
|--5--|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|-----|

My previous diagrams on this thread are based on close fingering. I have just spent the past three months working through this with spread fingering, and for some reason I like the close fingering more. But, for 5 string bass, the spread fingering at 3 notes per string creates a perfect 2 octive scale:

Major scale, Spread Fingering, Form 1

|-----|--6--|-----|--7--|--1--|
|-----|--3--|--4--|-----|--5--|
|-----|--7--|--1--|-----|--2--|
|--4--|-----|--5--|-----|--6--|
|--1--|-----|--2--|-----|--3--|

And, for any bass, the spread fingering at 7 positions provides a unique fingering sub-set for each note of the scale. Some people like this.

The close fingering 5 posisions work well with the 5 pentatonic or blues scale posisions. Some people like this.
