Internet Censorship/Copyright bill

It seems pointless. The DNS is just a convenience. Any website can publish its IP address. If enough important sites are censored in this way, people will switch to some third-party name service that bypasses the DNS system.

I can imagine this getting political very very quickly.. If a mod thinks my post is getting too political please delete it.

They still plan to Censor "Inappropriate material" here in Australia some time in the future.. however a "Blacklist" system is bound to be corrupt straight away, if not from the very start. They had a similar system in thailand I believe to filter out under age pornography, however a copy of the black list showed that it also blocked over a thousand sites that were considered to be "Defaming the royal family".

The internet is the only access we have left to a variety of un-censored information. In my opinion that should not be taken away in any country that is considered a "Free Country"

A me and a friend were talking recently about us being in the "Golden age of the internet". If I want to listen to a song I hop on the internet and look it up, and away I go, same with watching a movie, or playing a videogame. It will be interesting to see how long it remains that way.

Of course I always buy things I like, often more than once (Vinyl, Collectors edition etc.), I guess I could argue that downloading a videogame save the carbon emmisions of driving to and from the store as I end up picking it up when its convinient :D:D

But yeah, in my opinion internet censorship is a no-go, but im sure it will happen anyway :hmm:

Think of people like me (in India). Some of the really obscure music that I like can be obtained in Europe, North America, etc. for (relatively) pretty cheap prices. If I want to buy such a CD in India, I'll have to pay 5 to 6 times its price in, say, USA to get it shipped in, if at all I can find a site that does that (actually, much more than 5 to 6 times if you consider the fact that $1 in the US has much less value than Rs. 44.46 in India, which is the current exchange rate).

If I did get this stuff for as cheap as guys in the US, I'd buy the CD for every album I wanted to have. In fact, I can proudly say that whichever album I liked and was able to find here, I have bought.

I'm sure somebody with legal knowhow will jump up and point out a bunch of flaws in my logic, but it's fairly simple for me.

I live in Australia, so im in a similar boat with a lot of things. Unless its a top 40 hit or an Aussie band, i'll have to order it in, and its likely a good deal more expensive. Luckily our dollar is great at the moment, so its pretty cheap for me to order stuff from overseas.

Also, a lot of bands I like let you download their music free :D So just download and donate instead of buying a CD

You believe that you can find uncensored information on the internet? Which websites really host uncensored information? I'm aware of a paltry handful, but I'm curious as to your response.

All information, even primary source information, is often regulated by the entities in charge of it. Why would websites be any different?

While that is true, the internet is the only medium where the barrier of entry is so low - which means the information you get might be controlled by the entities in charge, but then you also have a lot of entities with different agendas, not one big government/corporate dude deciding what you do or do not do.

In any case, there are working technologies to bypass regulation. TOR, darknets. Worst case scenario, sneakernets (physically carrying data over borders) are almost untraceable.

Trying to censor the internet because of file sharing is akin to trying to stop the printing press, cassette tape, vhs, dvd burners with region codes, etc. etc. Those initiatives failed because culture will always spread regardless of what a few opponents call an epidemic or potential catastrophe.

The only thing that should be done is strengthen our nation's infrastructure to provide broadband access to all remote regions, and to upgrade existing wired and wireless lines to higher / faster capacity.

I can go on the internet with an opinion of my own and voice it, and other people can read it. I can say whatever the hell I want on my own website, and nobody (as yet) can really do a damn about it.

While the internet is not strictly "Un-Censored" it is about as free as any form of media can or will get.

Even here on talkbass my opinion gets across untainted. If I were to talk to the media, even the local paper or a magazine about an issue like this, they would twist my words to suit them. Here you get exactly what I am talking about, word for word.
