from the story:

"A good musician’s relationship with the past is tricky. You want to move forward without entirely forsaking what you’ve already done. You don’t want it defining you when so much future defining lies ahead. It’s a dilemma Meshell Ndegeocello was thinking through at her dining room table in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, on a recent afternoon."

Hey, @Morrrighan...isn't she playing an Acinonyx?

Beat me to it! If you or someone else already attached a PDF copy of the article, I'm sorry if I can't see that (not all features of the new TalkBass forum software work in my main browser setup, so I cannot see certain things). I am attaching the PDF here.

When I watched the start of NdegéOcello's recent Tiny Desk show, I was impressed and unsurprised by the excellence of the musicianship and the singers' artistry. As with random samples of her work in recent years, however, I could not relate to the thing holistically. But I think I understand what she is doing and why.

Although I allow that she should and will do with her music whatever she chooses to over the years, it's a fact that I am stuck on her early works. That doesn't mean I respect or admire her any less now. I do love me some Me'shell NdegéOcello, as a player and as a musician overall.

Got caught an article on her back in the beginning of her notoriety. The article read well sounded pretty groovy so I picked up an LP at my favorite LP store, Birdland Records in VaBeach... it was a total groove. I was hooked.

I must admit I never heard of her before, but it is always reassuring and heartwarming when people chose to serve their heart and the music, rather than their ego and the music industry.

And an honorable choice, when they actually had the option for fame and fortune in perspective had they chose differently.
