Smart yes, they made a whole new version of a phone with a "new" technology that is the next best thing since sliced bread. Millions of people will believe that apple has once again created a new, amazing product. Except it isn't really true, because they just bought somebody else's 15 years of hard work. But the average Joe don't know, and won't care.
But then again, that's been apple's mobile perogative since they started.
Why should the average Joe care? Apple saw potential in a developing product, so they purchased it to put further funding behind it to help it reach its potential. Companies do this every day.
I'll be getting the 4S at some point in the coming weeks. I don't want a larger screen or larger case and I have 3 years' worth of apps on my current iPhone 3G that I have been carrying since July '08.

MAYBE the 5 will have new, innovative technology that Apple didn't develop but had the means to buy out, but it is likely that by the time it comes out, Android phones will have had that technology or equivalent technology for weeks.
