Why should the average Joe care? Apple saw potential in a developing product, so they purchased it to put further funding behind it to help it reach its potential. Companies do this every day.

I'll be getting the 4S at some point in the coming weeks. I don't want a larger screen or larger case and I have 3 years' worth of apps on my current iPhone 3G that I have been carrying since July '08.

Not to sound like an @$$, but this is not true.
I'm an ex-iPhone fan boy but I've really disliked what Apple has been doing lately. The 4S is not the fastest smartphone (Google the Galaxy S II, Nexus Prime, HTC [forgot the name] etc.), although it is surpassing some tablets..but then again, so is my 3GS. Most graphically capable and powerful? Again, google the aforementioned phones. The camera isn't even the best; the Galaxy S II has about the same quality and the Nexus Prime (which is yet to be released) will likely have something even better.

I'm not necessarily complaining about Apple stuff as much as I am thankful (oh so thankful :hyper:) that they're falling behind. The new iPhone had so much hype and I felt that it was such a huge let down. MAYBE the 5 will have new, innovative technology that Apple didn't develop but had the means to buy out, but it is likely that by the time it comes out, Android phones will have had that technology or equivalent technology for weeks.

AND STILL NO FLASH?!?!?! :rollno:

Another thing I thought I'd add: Did anyone hear about the Samsung/Apple dilemma a few months back? AFAIK, Apple tried to bring legal action against Samsung in order to get their Super AMOLED (I think that's what it's called?) screen technology. I thought that was pretty slimey.

Yes, it is the fastest as has been proven by numerous benchmarks run by several different sources. If you're going to claim that something someone says is false then you need to come with something more than "Google it." Here is hard data that backs up my statements and shows that it totally smokes the GS2:

I wouldn't make such statements on a whim.

If you were previously an iPhone fanboy then why would you not like where Apple is going lately? The iPhone is miles ahead of where it previously was. That statement makes no sense.

DigMe already hit on a lot of what I was going to say but I'm gonna say it anyway ;). The iPhone 4S is currently in a league of it's own, like it or not. Is it light years ahead of the competition? Not quite but it's a pretty big step. Just take a look at the benchmarks. It's faster, more powerful, and specs-wise, superior to just about everything that's out right now. Again, check the benchmarks.

Seriously, the camera and camcorder on the iPhone is beyond just about everything else. That's one area where it is light years ahead and I don't see them falling into second place any time soon. To give you an idea. the iPhone 4's camera (not the 4S) was the best an entire year after it came out only being surpassed by it's successor. And why in the world would you want a flash on an cell phone camera anyway? It's bad enough on a normal camera (obviously not including off camera flash). I guess if you want all your pictures overexposed, washed out, and shadow-heavy, then sure why not, but otherwise you're not missing anything.

And what's this new direction you think Apple's going in? They've been doing the same thing for years now, only better. If you liked them before there's no reason not to like them now.

What is the big deal about cameras on cell phones? I don't use mine to take portrait quality photos or anything serious. Usually just goofy dumb stuff to send my friends and family. Who cares who has the best camera anyway?

I think asmthe cameras get better and better we will adjust our view of them as being more in line with point and shoots and less of a last resort. The camera on my phone is the ONLY camera that I have with me at all times. As someone who is very active in photography I am VERY interested in how good the camera is. This camera seems like it's going to be a huge step towards making point-and-shoots obsolete.

I've never taken a picture where I wished I had a crappier camera. Phone cams have become ubiquitous, and that's changed the importance of having an 'always there' cam for a lot of people. They're just part of the equation now in evaluating what kind of value a phone brings.

You can make the same 'who cares' argument about any of the non-phone functions that a smart phone brings to the table.

On Flash, regardless of anything else, Apple has decided it will not be bringing that technology to it's mobile devices. They're not waiting to get around to it, they just have their reasons for not going there at all (right or wrong).

Some of the best photos from my wedding came from a friend with an iphone 4. Better than our "professional" photographer, who apparently wasn't very good at this job. While I wish the megapixel count on the cameraphone were higher, these were pretty good. It's exciting that Apple investing so heavily in the camera since these devices have taken on a multitude of roles, more than just being a phone anyway.

The picture above is absolutely ridiculous, I can reach anywhere on the screen of my Inspire 4G and it's basically the same size as the SII. Heck, I can touch corner to corner with zero issue, and I don't have large hands by any stretch of the imagination. Unless that's the thumb of a 3 year old I'm calling straight shenanigans.

It's cool that they've upped the internals and the OS is starting to catch up to Android again, but that smaller screen is just a no-go for me. And Siri is a cute tech demo at best, if people start walking around chatting with their phones instead of using the silent touch interface I'm going to have a hard time not throwing elbows.

My thumb is longer than that too, I'm guessing this picture is about the zone you can tap with precision (middle of the thumb pad?).

Also, I'm intrigued. What is there now to do with four inches of screen, that you can't do with 3.5? I mean, I've used Android extensively before, and it fares well on a screen of this size too. Maybe I'm blind to something, but a bigger screen doesn't sound like a convincing argument. Especially not a "I would buy if –" sort of deal.

I love the size of my iPhone, it fits perfectly in my hand and, more importantly, in my pocket. A friend has the S2 and it wouldn't fit comfortably in my pocket.

Also, is there an app that you need to download for Siri? I upgraded to iOS 5 last night and I am not sure how it works. Or do you need the 4S?

Oh I disagree entirely. You can quite easily turn off the flash when it's not needed.

I agree that the flash will overexpose and wash out shots... But at least you'll GET the shots. There have been countless times I have tried to take pics in low to no light situations hoping I'd be able to PS the shot into something usable, always to no avail. I've missed some DAMN fine shots because my 3GS had no flash.

Go a while without a flash... You'll miss it too.
