Some dudes have done it and they're offering the code to do it to anyone who wants it for free. Does not require any hardware mods.

Twas only a matter of time.

They just figured it out like 4 hours ago..so anyone who claims they had a free unlock before that is FOS.

Funny, it was just on Monday that a software company came out with the FIRST software-only method to unlock the iPhone, and for one day they sold a bunch of copies of their software at $99/each.

Of course, within about 24 hours the hackers figured out how they did it, then they figured out another way to accomplish the same thing, for free of course.

I guess Hackers win again!

Those early, crazed iPhone buyers who 1) paid $200 more than the current iPhone price, and 2) paid extra to get out of their old cellphone contracts ARE now kicking themselves many times over.

At the moment, you can unlock it (which means you can use it with others sim cards/other carriers) or you can jailbreak it (which means you can use custom apps and games and such which are not apple approved - some very cool stuff and works well with 1.1.4). None of these have anything to do with the pc or mac it is connected to.

Just FYI that later this year Apple will be launching an online "App Store", where you can buy and download 3rd-party applications for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Don't know whether their store will be any good, but it might reduce your inclination to "jailbreak" it.

Doesn't matter if you jailbreak it, yo can fully reset it since its changing the software only. You can fully erase anything you changed by reseting your firmware.

The App Store will be coming out in June when the new 3G iPhone (likely) will come out too. I'm excited for it after watching Job's keynote. I can't wait to play games like Super Monkey Ball with the accelerometer.
