Irish Slang...

Do you have "quere" down south? It's a bit like "great" I suppose, eg:

"That's a quere job, ey?"

Pronounced a bit like "qwhere". I love country slang, there's the strangest stuff, and the phrases are funny. If someone's sad, they're "trippin' over their face".

As for American and Canadian accents--there really isn't a difference. Everyone thinks that Canadians always use the word 'eh' in their sentences. That's simply not true. There are a few, but not that many. It's like saying all Americans sound like the Norwegians from northern Minnesota and use 'yaaa' in all their sentences. I can't tell the difference between Canadians or Americans.

There is actually a subtle difference between US and Canadian accents, but you have to hang around a lot of both nationalities before you begin to notice the difference.

I find Kiefer Sutherland's accent somewhat distracting when watching the rah-U.S.A. show "24."

Sham! Just lamped the savage thread! How many feens or beors wouldabe knockin around here? Anyone know if Matties on maylor street is still open? SAVAGE bidda mangle in there, and Mattie's sound out. Almost got nabbed by the Finnish shades havin a few smokes the other day, just puttin it out when the twin-bulb parks up nexta me. Haunted.

Don't be nowan sayin 'qwhere' down here boy! Ya langer!

How dare you all make fun of the Irish and the way they talk. Didn't you guys see I_Like_RATM's posts in the Van Morrison thread? You are not allowed to say things about the Irish or else you are stereotyping them and making fun of them.

And don't you dare say something about their drinking!

Know how to fix that so you're nice and accent-free...well maybe wind up with your own strange accent. Be raised by a French Grandfather, an English Grandfather, Czech Grandmother, German Grandmother, Australian stepmother and have your best friend for the first 7 years of life be a Russian exchange student. You sure wind up speaking kind of strangely after that.

I can't. I had an Irish Grandfather who married a half-Irish/half-Choctaw woman. They had my father, who was raised in Texas, so he had a slightly odd accent. My mom was raised in Alabama as the product of an Irish man, and a half-Irish, half-Ukrainian woman. So I am 3/4 Irish, 1/8 Choctaw, 1/8 Ukrainian, raised in Texas. I usually call that American. We're all mutts here.

But I don't usually have much of an accent. I have 'travelers ears'. If I hear a lot of an accent it tries to sneak into my speech until the source goes away. So I mostly sound like Dan Rather.

I always liked my Grangpa's accent, It the morning he sounded like everyone else. But as the day went on his accent would come back. By nighttime we couldn't understand him.
morning: "Look at that."
evening: "Jaysus! Wooja bay lewkin' at dat."

I hear all that stuff on a day-to-day basis! :)

I would be an Australian if I could talk my wife into it.

Moike
Moike, one conversation between your wife and Poida, and she'll be over here in a flash. It really is a great place to live!

I thought it was Tasmania. Seriously now, when the choice was hanging or being shipped to Australia, it's no wonder the Irish ended Up Over.
Actually that was the English. English and Irish people love it when you get them confused...NOT.

Some of the nicest people i have met were Aussies in Ireland
They're on holidays! :)

Actually Aussies and Irish seem to get along very well. We have the same sarcastic and cheeky sense of humour. Just last night I had an patriotic Irishman telling me that he will do anything for his country... except live there :)

actually, loads of Irish were sent to Australia and Tasmania in particular on prison ships. By the English, of course, who also sent their own prisoners.

There's a really great entertaining book by Pete McCarthy (no relation!) called 'The Road to McCarthy' if you want to learn more about it.
