Probably the responsible financial decision would be to buy the MIM. You'd be able to get your money back and that means you can sell it down the road to fund the next GAS bass.
If resale is the important, then you are probably better off with the MIM. No reason you can't mod that as well. If you can't do the work yourself, then the savings are no longer there because you have to pay someone to do everything. MIM's are going pretty cheap these days. So it really depends on the price of the MIM as to whether it's worth it or not.
