All my hard cases are stored in a closet. I might have to sell a few of them to make room, Tom Cruise was complaining that it's kind of tight in there.

I used to like a case. I guess it is a plus when a guitar is shipped in a case, but if it arrives unharmed, I don't know if it matters. Once you hit like 10 guitars/basses having to keep 10 cases somewhere is annoying.
The last two basses I sold on CraigsList came with a hard case and neither buyer wanted the case. Said they'd just have to find some place to store it. Got both cases listed separately on CL now and haven't had a nibble so far.
I've been playing since '66 - all used guitars w/o cases up until '85 when I got my first new basses - Fender MIM Active J- Bass and P-Bass. The guitars were something like $475 & $575 .. around there, and no cases. I added two look-alike, non-Fender hard cases w/o the name plates for around $40 ea.
My last three guitars were new with no cases included. Since I'm not gigging, I got new gig bags for two of them. The Yamaha bass got a soft-all-over bag - just a dust cover really. The Classic 50s Strat got a Fender bag which is a bit firmer and has more padding.
The third (Taylor Big Baby) was packaged with a Taylor gig bag (not really included with guitar - they just added the price into the "sale" price). That is a nice bag with stiff sides and compartments.
I was on Fender's website. I only looked at the Player P- Bass and American Professional P- Bass. No case with the Player (69.99 for their gig bag), but the American comes with their Elite Molded hardshell case.
Also remember way back when the salesperson would throw in a dozen picks of my choice and sometimes even an extra set of strings or a strap. I don't get that anymore..

some basses are well worth $1k and a case is extra and thats perfectly fair?
depends on the deal i guess. I prefer a case for shipping but i have good quality gig bags I use and don't really care as long as the price reflects not having a case fairly..

These days is always better than you might think...
22 years ago, I've spent 1.600,- for a JAPANESE Fender Jazz without even a gigbag...I wouldn't even have dared to mention the word case back then...
I still like it.
I like HSCs, myself, but agree that any bass that cost over $1K should include at least a top-quality gig bag.
Man, I bought a 1994 Stingray brand new in August 1994 for $899. I then bought another 1994 Fretless Stringray as NOS the following year for $850. Cases were not included in either sale. Both were from Sam Ash’s Queens, NY store.
So where did you get a brand new 1994 Stingray for $600?

I retain a single hard shell case for van/trailer road touring. With gig bags, your bass would be dead in no time. I don't expect one when I buy a bass though and I have more than enough gig bags to last me a lifetime. I only travel with one bass, but if I did bring more, I'd go buy more of the same ATA case with TSA locks that I use now.

LOL, I DIDN’T! I found the original receipt a couple weeks ago when I was going through some old files. It was $900. But I got a case!
I used to spend a lot of time up in the NUC music stores, I’d hit Sam Ash, Manny’s, Rudy’s, I’d spend all day.
