Which seems to parallel the childhood fatal injury graph almost exactly. It also reinforces my hunch that it may not really be all about safer monkey bars and bike helmets, but DUI laws and seat belts, or maybe just a more safety-conscious and risk-averse culture overall.

Wondered that myself. I was 19 in 1986. I don't recall anything spectacular happening that would result in that brief uptick. I remember the Challenger disaster clear as a bell, but I don't think that would have resulted in an increase in deaths due to drunk driving or accidents....

In the U.S. in 1976, the "National Maximum Speed Law" was passed which prohibited speeds over 55 mph everywhere.

It was modified in 1986 to increase the limit to 65 mph on certain highways.

It was then repealed in 1995, which returned control of speed limits to each state.
