I've recently purchased a Hofner Violin Ignition b bass, and loving this alternative. Funny thing is that for years I hated the look of them, and played a "real bass". How narrow minded I had been. The action is way down with D'Addario flatwound chrome's ( medium scale so they bend nicely). I particularly love the tones on the upper neck too, even the short stubby double-bass tones. Because the body is so petite, the neck doesn't look short scale in proportion to my eye. It's light and just perfect for noodling about on. Still liking my P bass. Funny how tastes can change. Wouldn't have even considered a shorty a few months back!

Not my favorite either. I understand the attraction but I haven't found one that I get along with yet, nor did I really feel the need to find one.

I play shorties because it just feels right to me. Never bonded with a bass until I tried a shorty. Resparked my desire to play. Never really knew they came in different sizes but even less local shops back then than now.

Wish i liked full scales. So many more choices locally instead of same 3 or 4 shorties.

I want to try more medium scales to see how those feel but only seen 1 (mezzo). It was ok but nothing to convert me.

Me playing a shorty is better than me not playing at all.

If it works for you, then it does. I've been playing 34" scale Fender (and Fenderish) basses for almost 40 years. I'm happy with that, especially with a precision neck.

I also prefer chocolate...

I'm not into long scales, and there is nothing wrong with me. Hence, by analogy I think you're fine.

They sound boomy and feel sloppy. Also I have fat fingers and mostly play DB, so it's too much of an adjustment.

Other than that, they're cute and novel! I've jonesed for a short Fender ever since I saw a Puerto Rican handbell choir accompanied by a guy playing an old musicmaster. But will I ever pull the trigger on one? Nah, prolly not.

I love them, but can see why others might not. All else being equal—string tension can be a bit floppier, tones can be a bit deeper, and they make tall people look gigantic.

The Guild ABG is one of the good sounding ones but besides the laminated top what’s on topic is the short scale. Wasn’t that it was too short to play it was that a longer scale excites the top and you get more sound and volume.
I loved and played Gibson EB2Ds and EBOs in the late ‘60s.

I feel very fortunate that my recent wrist issues happened at a time when short scale basses are so popular that 1) I have lots of options and 2) they’re popular enough that it doesn’t look weird that I’m playing one.
