Is the Eventide H90 the best ?

I've been messing with an H9 Max. It's convoluted but sweet Pamela Andersen ... it's good. I just made the mistake of listening to Nate (*Radio Voice) Navarro's H90 demo... damn...

*JK NN but really, you could do drive time in any market Heli Traffic, Weather from the Beach... or GOOOOAAALL with that voice and enunciation you can write a ticket

Yeah Nate's demo inspired me to get the H90. Even after getting it, and downloading his presets for it, I've still gone back and listened to his demos several times. Really cool stuff.

Nate is killer in every aspect, not just bass playing. Which is a problem. He can make sound anything absolutely great. Doesn't really tell me if the gear in question is actually good or if it is just Nate's brilliance and charisma.

I’ve had H90 on the brain lately so I’m following this.

The spill over ability between patches is super interesting to me for reasons. The ability to route external pedals as inserts is also interesting. I’m curious about the harmonizing and pitch shifting. It seems like a lot of power in a pedal.

The H90 is a beast and even if I spend time learning it deeply, it will take a long time, Some users share patches through patch storage

I use it for synths, baritone sax and guitar and even in my DAW The Nate Patch List is very small representation of what it can do

I didn't care for the Eventide H9 at all. I know that the H90 shares many of the same algorithms.
I vastly preferred the Strymon pedals I was using at the time. I've since sold those off for UAFX (the small box series evermore and orion) and like them even better.

H9max is fantastic, the H90 is like 2 at once.
I will get one some day, the price is still pretty tough.

H90 is great, but I think its strong points IMO lean heavily towards ambient and textural soundmaking where it does things that few other options can match (though those types of sounds are more and more popular and available from other companies too as time goes on). There are great conventional delay/reverb/modulation/etc engines in there too, but I think many other dedicated pedals are more versatile in more conventional sound arenas. The limitations of only two algorithms at once can make the price hard to stomach of you aren’t trying to do some of the crazier things that it excels in (which are definitely more commonly used with guitar or synth than bass).

That’s good info. I wonder how many players would prefer the Neural Quad Cortex Mini. It’s definitely a few more dollars, but also offers more for the “average” player. The Darkglass Anagram is even closer to the H90 in price.

My ambient and synth work probably would lean me towards the H90 but the Cortex Mini might get another look from me.

My ambient and synth work probably would lean me towards the H90 but the Cortex Mini might get another look from me.

I see the H90 as being in a different category than the Quad Cortex or Anagram. Sure they're all muti-effects units but the focus of the H90 is specific, high quality effects, while the QC and Anagram are more all-in-ones with a big focus on amp/cab/dirt modeling and captures. If you want to dive into weird, then the H90 is the way to go. It's kinda like how when people were trying to compare the Zoia to things like the HX Stomp. Similarities exist, but completely different beasts really.

I agree- when I consider the strange things the H90 can do that would require a dedicated $300+ option per algorithm the price starts to not seem so crazy. Plus they continue to add new sounds (though not at the pace of Line 6 with the Helix for years).

You might be able to find ambient effects that are better than the H90, but I'm not sure you can do it within the same footprint. You'd either need multiple dedicated pedals, a much larger pedal (and most of these focus on amp models, not ambient effects), or a rack unit.

I still love my Nemesis and Ventris, and kinda regret trading my MD-500, but I'd rather give that real estate to dirt pedals.
