Is There a Need For Anything More Than A Preamp?

Don't ever assume the venue has good monitors/necessary gear for bass players. I have played TERRIBLE bars with world class sound guys, amazing monitors, and a great overall setup. Other BIG places I have done, have come far shorter. They usually have monitors suitable vocals, two guitars, and nothing else. Some of the small bars we have played have no support for bass players - thank goodness I had two 410's or 2 210's. Otherwise, do not expect to be heard with your small combo amp.

Craigslist or Guitar Centers used section is a great way to get some gear really cheap. GC has a 30 day return policy. Buy something good, use it for a show and keep it in GOOD shape. Then return it. No harm in doing that. Full refund - I do it constantly. It is a great way to test drive gear "on the job".
