To clarify, I heard that they are edging toward lower grades of wood, not that they are using different species of wood than before.

Is There Something Special About Old Stingray 5s?

Nah, no one is edging toward lower grades at all.
Almost everything being produced now is ash. I've heard the figure "99%" used with some authority.
The earliest SR5s did have alnico versus ceramic pickups and the preamp has been tweaked over the years.
Whether older SR5s are better? All subjective. I've had old ones, new ones, in-between ones and never really found a stinker in the bunch. But the differences are pretty small, really.
I love my alnico 20th SR5, but I've had a buttload of ceramic pickup SR5s, too, and didn't feel I was missing a thing. (Heinz, which mister Stankface has now, comes immediately to mind.)
If you prefer the older SR5s, good for you. I certainly wouldn't argue with you. Or, conversely, if you prefer the newer ones, I can see your point there, too.
But the quality isn't going anywhere. It's where it's always been, which is pretty damned good.

You made a comment that no one could see a birdseye neck while listening to your CD. I asked why, then, do you care what color your bass is, when no one will be able to see that either while listening to your CD... Just following your train of "logic." Go back through the thread, I guess
In which I said it really, in the end, didn't matter what color.
Looks like i'm not the only one that needs to re-read the thread.
Either way, you can't go wrong with an SR5.
