I own both and went out of my way to make sure they were different sounds. Lakland now makes several models similar to Fender models so on that front there may be similarities, but subtle differences also in similar models. I love my stock Fender Jazz bass, hence the avatar, but also love my 4402 and 5501. Both of my Laklands have Bartolini electronics and guess what? I've played Fenders with Bartolinis that have a similar sound as well. Its a complicated mix when you combine electronics, feel of the designs, setup, playability etc. What I will say is, I love the plek on my 5501 and I think all Laklands have the vintage style which coincidentally my Fender Roadworn Jazz has as well. Love those thinner frets over the medium jumbo or whatever regular frets are. Again, personal preference. Whatever feels, sounds and plays best for you is what's best for you! Let us know what you decide and good luck and have fun checking them out.
