Yeah it's 4/4. The band is just going out of it's way to not feature the 1 - that's why it feels so spacey. During the guitar solo, the groove it drifts into a more normal feel.
Wasn't aware of her singing either - thanks for sharing! Quite a young talent this one.
Great description. Add to that the beat is so not "onecentric" that it's hard to tell where the one is during the opening drum groove. I dig it. The OCD part of me can count to 4 duri g the body of the song so I don't have to poke my eyes out with an ice pick. But it's a different feel and groove at the same time.
She's maturing as a vocalist. She came from the womb being able to kill on bass.
Here's another one where they leave the 1 almost completely empty. The verse starts around 0:55 in, and the hi hat closing is the only think that happens on the 1. When they do finally hit the 1 it's like they opened the floodgates. Such an effective way to build and release tension.
I'm sure glad I asked this here first, rather than ask online and expose my ignorance to they very person who wrote the song.

Boom. I (like others here, probably), did get the rhythm as 4/4 but not the snare-on-the-one thing until hearing the more "open" part starting from 1:43, noticing what I'd provisionally (but suspiciously) identified as a missing eighth note (and an odd-time) in the last measure, then hearing the chorus switch back to the starting section with no such skip; hence an even deeper-seated suspect that my perception of the returning verse was now shifted, which rescrolling till the start of the video confirmed.
