I've also seen this on my Soviet classical guitar. It's very stable and sounds great, but no one brags about it since it's a student model from the other side of the Iron Curtain. Some current Martin guitars are also made this way, but they don't sound as good to me.

Dang it, I've been googling "vintage Japanese bass" for over an hour and you just nail it. Excellent job.
IIRC, some of those "short scale" Japanese basses are more like "super short" than just "short" scale. I would guess this one is the range of a guitar scale (25.5") rather than the 30" scale of a musicmaster (which is "short" compared to the standard 34").
Its an old Japanese bass.
But .... It looks like a pretty good example. ...of what it is.

One of my favourite 'features' of TB is the ability of many TBers to identify any bass in no time at all.
I don't think so. Fender made a crappy one and a good one like I had. The Fenders both looked the same but the better had much better hardware.

Unfortunately that’s a borrowed picture. I don’t have a classic Musicmaster, there was one listed locally in Craigslist recently but they wanted $1500 for it. Might have bought it if it was a little cheaper but I can’t justify buying classic economy bass at that cost for vibes and feels. I do however think the modern Musicmaster equivalent, the Bronco bass is totally worth it for how economical it is. Necks on those are amazingly comfortable and fret work is usually great.Does yours have that drippy looking overspray on the headstock. Mine does!
