Yeah, the affinities aren't bad just not anything stellar to me, I'd much rather go with an SX over the affinity. Thunderbird epis are pretty decent, but that pack they come in are so overpriced.

Is This a Good Bass

I used to own an Epi TB. Descent bass, but has a chunky neck, neck dive, and uncomfortable to play sitting down, IMO. The Affinity is Squier's bottom of the barrel.
As someone pointed out, it would be advisable to get the advice of an experienced player who can actually help you with your bass. Even a skinny string player with experience will be helpful. No matter what you buy it will probably need adjustments when it first arrives. A poorly set up instrument can be a real discouragement to a beginner. And BTW, I would not buy a bass and not own an amp. Unless the house is dead quiet, you will barely be able to hear yourself, won't be able to practice along with your CD's, and will probably loose interest quickly.

thanks for the help guys, i have a friend whos been playing bass for as long as i've been drumming ( 5 years) so i'll ask him if he could come to L&M with me or help me find a good used bass
