Or would you care to point to a better or, if you will, worse cut?
Great examples here of "different sound signature" in different periods of Mr. Carter. I would like to know your thoughts about my opinion (very recent opinion) about Mr Carter and his sound after attentive listening of his 60 work with Miles, his '70 pickup direct sound, his '80/'90 sound (warmer but always very distinct and upfront in the mix) and his actual sound ( a little more natural, less midrange , darker). My opinion is: RON CARTER SOUNDS THE SAME WITH MILES UNTIL TODAY what changes is equipment (strings, pickup and recording approach) but his concept is the same. I realized this listening to his playing on ESP. I have always thought that he changed his "style" with the arriving of pickups and i always regretted his beautiful sound of the sixties but i was wrong. Maybe i don't like his "pickup DI sound" but if i go just a little deeper i discover the beauty and perfection of his playing on each of his recordings on each of his periods. Please share your opinions, do you agree and if not why?
I agree. It's what he is playing that is most important, not the sound he gets. I do like that you can hear what he is playing more clearly than the work in the 60s (as noted by Sam Sherry), even if the DI sound is a bit to much.
I was afraid this post was going to be about the awfulness of "dreaded bass direct". I'm glad to see you and Sam Sherry steered it away from that direction.
If curious, and strong stomached, here is the track.
double scale plus a grand, if I remember correctly, 1972 dollars.

For a great example of direct sound walking genius check this one out:
Eddie Gomez is another example. His 70s albums with Chick Corea for example. I like it all as long as the playing is great.
