It affects me not having volute?

My luthier told me yesterday that there was still time to remove the volute in the neck of my custom bass, if I didn't like how it looks.. i really don't like how it looks and feel, but at the end i don't care aestetic issues if it give benefits..

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of the volute? he uses premium wood, hard rock maple! thanks

There is a lot of disagreement among luthiers as to whether nor not the volute actually has any structural advantage. Certainly, a LOT of necks have been produced without one.

I'd say that if you don't like it and your luthier is confident that it isn't necessary, have him ditch it.

+1 if the truss rod access is at the headstock, the added material of the volute can "make up mass" to provide strength to the transition from neck to headstock.

Also, they look cool, and make a neat-o stop for your thumb when doing a dive-bomb slide down the neck

+2.........if the truss adjust is at the nut, leave it......it will be stronger.....since you said body, no matter (i just saw that)
