I've often found that changing the phase has a significant impact on the character & timbre of my double bass w/ piezo. One setting usually works quite a bit better, and of course it varies.
I would have never theorized or predicted that to be the case, but I definitely get why so many of the better buffer preamps have a phase switch. More "essential" than a notch, graphic or parametric EQ IMO/E.
