I've got a theory...

Discussion in 'Off Topic [BG]' started by Auzzie-Phoenix, Apr 9, 2014.

  1. That theory states this: There are just certain characters on television that you cannot truly hate.

While I do realize that some people hate a lot of tv characters, I'm sure there are some that even they would make exceptions for. I've had this conversation with a few co-workers and they think that it's plausible.

    My list:

1.)Mr. Rourke from fantasy island (Ricardo Montalban)
    2.)Woody from Cheers (Woody Harrelson)
    3.)Norm from Cheers (George Wendt)
4.)Wilson from Home Improvement (Earl Hindman)
5.)Gomez Addams from Addams Family (John Astin)
6.)Bull from Night Court (Richard Moll)
7.)Al Bundy from Married With Children (Ed O'Neill)
8.)Lowell from Wings (Thomas Haden Church)
9.)Uncle Fester from Addams Family (Jackie Coogan)
    10.)MacGuyver (Richard Dean Anderson)
11.)Morticia from Addams Family (Carolyn Jones)
    12.)Herman Munster (Fred Gwynne)
    13.)Grandpa Munster (Al Lewis)

I could keep going on and on. What characters do you think would fit with this theory? What arguments against this theory? Expand on the theory or try to denounce it, just keep it civil.

    Beg to differ.....

Taxi was great but there's only three reasons in my opinion, Christopher LLoyd (bar none the best character on the show), Danny de Vito and Judd Hirsch for being (more or less) the straight man. Marilu Henner was alright too. But id' sonner name Ignatowski or De Palma as two chracters you just can't hate (well de palma is the kind you love hating...) than Latka...

That is my opinion anyway. I know loads of people also liked Kaufman and Danza but personally I found Latka too obvious and unfunny and actually really annoying and Danza too..dumb I guess. Though he wasn't as bad as Jeff whatshisname.

I'll agree on Ignatowski.....would take a cold, cold heart to hate that guy.

When I was teenager I always thought Morticia from Addams Family was hot and very doable.

Gilligan was easy to hate. If I had been on the island, he would have been dead after the second or third failed rescue attempt.

As an aside, Raul Julia was the greatest Gomez Adams.

    Not. Even. Close.

Are you theorizing certain characters on TV that ALL people cannot truly hate?

Because, I didn't like Woody from Cheers and Wilson from Home Improvement.

One that is not on the list is Allen from, "Two And A Half Men." He is the kind of guy that I would like to hold face down in a pool of mud. I could never put up with a guy like that in real life.

What about Mary Ann? Nobody hates Mary Ann.

I've seen that show exactly twice and can't think of any aspect of it I wouldn't want to drown in a pool of mud, let alone watch again.

  15. It's a rough theory about CERTAIN characters on tv that the vast majority cannot or will not hate upon. While it doesn't apply to all characters, I also realize that it doesn't apply to all people. More specifically the definition of hate would be "would you be willing to end their life with a shotgun" as an example of hatred level. Just not caring for the character isn't the extreme i'm thinking of. I don't particularly care for edith bunker but I wouldn't end her with a shotgun.. etc...

Oh.... hmm... I wouldn't shoot a real person because of their character, but I would fake shoot a fake character to its fake death. Doesn't that count as hate?

Never really liked Mr Rourke that much--he always seemed too smug for my liking. And he was very condescending to Tatoo
I was waiting for Tatoo to kick him in the shins.

Al Bundy never appealed to me as a character, too whiny and too stuck in the past.

But some good choices on the rest of the OP's list.
