Hello.
I've been toying with the idea of replacing the pickup in my MIM J bass for quite some time. I say pickup instead of "pickups" because I never use the bridge pickup, just 100% neck.
Anyway, I really like the sound of my dad's p-bass. I'm also still kind of fond of the sound of my j-bass with neck soloed. I'm thinking it would be nice to get somewhere in between, and get rid of unwanted hum while I'm at it.
So, what I'm considering is to either perform a bit of surgery and fit the j-bass with a p pickup in the correct location (i.e. where it would sit on a p-bass), or get a Lindy Fralin split j-bass neck with a 5% overwind to get a bit more output and mid range. In the second scenario, I would just remove the bridge pickup from the equation altogether and wire the neck pickup alone to the volume and tone (leaving a dummy volume pot installed and the bridge pickup installed but not wired).
FYI, I found samples of 5 or so bass pickup recordings online, and my favorite of the group was the Seymour Duncan SJB2, which is wound for more output and clearly had more prominent midrange. This is what lead me to consider overwind on the Lindy Fralin. I prefer the hum canceling, otherwise I would just go for the SJB2.
I often keep my tone knob pretty low, play with my right hand over the neck pickup or even right over the fingerboard, and am digging the new flatwounds I just put on the bass, so that might give you a little more insight into the kind of player I am and the sound I'm after.
Thanks!
