I don't think people want to hear about all the mistakes I made trying to find the right basses to suit me. I guess there is a comedy thread I could post it in.
In your pm to me, you mentioned you want something light weight, comfortable, easy to play and has good sound. You said you were considering an SX or a Samick and I recommend both.
I made the mistake of trying some even lighter P-copies(Hondo and Austin)but they just didn't have the meaty fullness of the SX or the Samick.
As I mentioned I also tried a ton of other basses including expensive custom basses, but they didn't work out for various reasons.
Maybe I should also mention that I play in a Country and Rock cover band that gigs most weekends. So I'm not doing anything fancy, but I'm making money with my cheap workhorse basses.
You also said you're not familiar with the differences in a P or J sound. A lot of people can't tell the difference, but like most things, once you get involved with them you start to notice the details.
I would describe a P bass as having a deep fat sound, but not with not as much detail or articulation.
J basses tend to have more midrange punch, with more detail and articulation from the bridge pickup.
I think the P/J pickup combination gives the best of both worlds.
To me, the SX basses closely capture the way a P-bass or J-bass is supposed to sound.
My Samick Corsair bass with P/J pickups sounds very good too and is really my best overall bass, but it lacks some of the tonal personality of my SX basses. The neck on the Samick does seem to play perfectly however, where even my limited edition SX bass has a few imperfections.
So if your choosing between the two, I think the SX is better looking, plays well and sounds like a P or a J. The Samick is better balanced, over all plays a little better, but the sound although good doesn't have an old fasioned Fender sound. Maybe it can be described as more modern?
