Jaco playing So What

I'm a big Jaco fan, but I think it's funny that you chose a video which tends to show the opposite of what you say! :p

So for a start "So What" is basically just two chords (modes technically) and Jaco gets in plenty of his signature 'licks' that you can hear on WR Recordings and elsewhere.

Also - his solo isn't very melodic and doesn't really go anywhere - I've heard/seen better from him! :)

Although Jaco threw in 5-6 of his familiar licks
I would say that 3/5 of the solo was improvised.

What are your three favorite live Jaco-solos
Bruce?

Mine are his solo on Zores Mores from Trilogue,
his solo on All The Things You Are with Pat
Metheny from a bootleg recorded in 1975/76 and
his solo on Mr.PC with Brian Melvin in Toulose.

That's a real interesting video. His playing is totally awesome but he comes nowhere near close the Jaco feel. It's funny how you can really tell he tried very hard to sound like Jaco (in this particular piece) but (again imho) utterly failed.

Goes to show that Jaco isn't someone who can be copied so easily.

Well he's one of the few that's actually played with Jaco. I think watching this video you can tell he "gets" what Jaco meant to express through his music, that's always a big plus on cats who copy licks because they think it'll make them more proficient technically but completely omit looking at the "feel" part of Jaco's playing, which goes much further than his technical prowess.

Whilst I completely agree with this statement
One thing

He's a guitarist, really...playing like Django most of the time...:D:hiding:
I think as a guitarist he does have a voice.

Well, I'm not even really a big Jaco fan, but I do enjoy some of his work. I didn't think this was very good. For starters the tempo seem to me like it's just too fast for this tune to groove right. The drums are killing me, I'm not digging the constant fast cymbal pulse... The whole things just seems fast and kind of messy. I could almost suspect that copious amounts of cocaine were used back stage just prior to this recording.
